Living with a 996
I get my golf clubs in a staff bag into the back, no problem. Have to take the woods out and lay alongside though. Hockey stuff shouldn't be a problem if you don't have a passenger. Just buy a 996 and make it work. After driving it a few days you will be well motivated. Have fun!
I have a 2004 Carrera 4S as my daily driver... I use it for everything, its surprising how utilitarian these cars really are. I've gone on road trips with this car, seen snow, hail, and rain. A roof rack is extremely helpful, I found one here used, and bought a roof basket for it as well, with that and the right tires you can go pretty much anywhere. The AWD has no negative effects on road feel or handling in anyway. Ive had mine for almost a year now, best car Ive ever owned.

andyb, I drive my 996 cab as a DD in the philly area. I put back the passenger seat and pop the bag there just like I do with my golf clubs. I find that the sticks fit pretty well if you put the blade side down in the passenger side foot area. I have not had any problems driving it in the winter months here in PA.
Don't know about your hockey gear but I do drive my C2 in the snow - my every day driver. I run factory 18s with Blizzaks for my snow set and, here in Bend, OR, WE GET SNOW. My 911 does great and, in addition to that, my driveway is 340 ft long and has an uphill 12 degree ascent. My car rips in the snow and my car is not equipped with PSM. I've worked for Porsche for over 12 years now and know dozens of owners here in Oregon and around the northwest that drive their cars all year. Just got to have the right shoes for the job and feel confidence in you car.
Porsche and the Hockey player
Just back from a hockey tournament in Blaine,MN. Here a photos how to get to the arena in style

BTW my K&N CAI performed well in the rain, no problems
and so did the rest of the car

I cannot speak to how it would drive in the snow. Living down here in Sunny SoCal we make the snow for our local mountains. Maybe you should do what Ben Franklin did when he had a tough choice to make. Ben would take out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, he would write the reasons FOR doing something and the the other would be for NOT. Here's a few to get you started. The interiors in these cars are TIGHT! Getting in and out with winter clothes on doesn't sound like fun to me. Ever surface of the interior of my 99 is IMHO is fragile at best. For example, I purchased one of those plastic cup holders that you push down between the bolster and the center console and it scratched the paint off of the console WTF? The first time! Last one. If I lived somewhere as scenic as upstate NY I would want a versatile vehicle that could take me and my lady friend up some back road or fire break to a scenic and private spot. Know what I mean? Now a few FOR reasons. It's fast as F#$%. It's like having a private roller coaster on the twisty roads. The chicks dig it man. Mine has been worry free for the 5 or so years that I owned it. IF you decide to pull the trigger, you may want to come down here to buy one. You can't move 10 feet in Newport Beach without seeing a 100K+ vehicle so there are a TON of them for sale in the aftermarket. Cars that have been driven lightly by some lady real estate agent or Dr. or the such. Cars that have never been over 100MPH. Plus it would be a fun experience driving it home. After you had the clear bra installed. Oh yeah, you might want to consider a cabriolet with a removable hard top. If you find a cab without a hardtop, there are always a bunch of them here for sale on Craigslist for $300 to $600. CHEERS!
Amen. For a close to $100k new car I was really disappointed by the fragile interiors. I gave up after awhile and started living with the minor scratches.
