K&N question.
My kit came with the filter "sock", "cover" whatever they call it but It seems to help cause I've not had any issues with driving in the rain.
I might be the only 996 owner with a K&N CAI that hasn't had all the problems people mention.......

The PO of my car installed one with the sock. Sounds awesome (compared to stock airbox and stock air filter), but I too live in a rainy environment and I did not feel comfortable with it. I do know that the MAF was changed on my car earlier this year and I am still trying to chase down a major misfire during cold conditions which I think are related to this relatively new MAF being bad too (no CEL lights). At the end of they day, peace of mind is more important to me than anything else, so I am OK with the stock system, though I am looking for one of those "famous orange caps" to yield the same sound result, but without any of the other negative aspects of the K&N CAI. Hell, I'd trade my K&N for a new MAF!
I imagine your car still has the retractable wing, mine doesn't. The misha wing on my car has vents directed right to the cai, so when it rains it drips right on it causing it to have issues.
No I have a cup wing and deck lid with the large vented openings.
Now I envy you. Wish I could keep it on, it does sound good, but still haven't got the original question answered.
If your talking about the "benefits without the tune" question.....The only way to get the most out of the intake/exhaust set up is to get the ECU flashed.
I'm running the K&N with the older style FabSpeed cat delete pipes and a Gundo/Fister hacked exhaust and honestly the only thing I've noticed is a loss of low end torque and a sweet exhaust note.
That being said the companies selling these parts all boast increased performance and power some providing dyno sheets. The only way to know if it has done any improvement to your car is to dyno the car before and after install of the parts and yes that's a complete pain in the ***.
My next course of action is adding the IPD plenum and flash the ECU and see where that get's me. The IPD plenum seems to be what people say give these NA 911 motors the biggest boost in overall performance.

I hope that did help, I can only speak of my experience as you know others have run into different issues or problems etc with different mods.
I think a lot of the problems are guy's cutting corners on the installs not completely following the procedures put in place or really not knowing what they're doing.
I'm running the cat delete pipes with all 4 O2 sensors in place and have never had a check engine light for that either yet that is one of the biggest complaints about those pipes.
By no means do I consider myself an expert on all things Porsche but I've worked on sports cars for over 20yrs even built and raced a 93' RX7 track car doing 80% of the work myself and I've found that a lot of the forums and the DIY tutorials make some of the jobs seem way harder then they really are.
There is tons of useful info but sometimes you have to sift through some B.S.and misinformation by guys that don't even own the car in question to get to it.

can you please tell me the exact Number of that Injen Dry Filter ??
Thanxx
+1, the drop in filter with the silicone air intake hose is perfect, sounds good too. IMO, the only advantage to the K&N type filters are the looks.
and the sound especially above 4k
