I like the look of this 996:

Notice how the bottom lights that is part of the bumper, is clear, instead of being a bright bold orange like the 1999 models? Is this basically a revision in the 2001 models or is it an OEM or 3rd party aesthetic mod?

You have to reinstall your headlights and from the opening of the side markers you have to glue that orange plastic lense out piece by piece with a soldering iron.
there should be some threads about that mod. protect the opening with some tape and then go. Its only a plastic lense inside...after that just put a orange blinking lamp inside..done
I did that also with my headlights....

greets form germany

It was a mid-year change in model year 2000. If you have a 996 with the amber strip on the bottom, you can't just remove the amber strip. You need to buy new headlights. Then for an even cleaner look, you would need to remove the amber reflectors behind the turn signals using a soldering gun. Do a search for "amberdectormy." Here's how mine look after the amberdectomy.
