Should I worry less?
Hi all,
First week ownership of 911(1998 C2, done 103K km). A childhood dream came true. I love every bit of this car.
I spoke with the Porsche dealer here in Doha regarding the infamous IMS issue. They told me not to worry about it as they have not seen any engine failed because of that. I have to say there are not too many 911 here on the road.
After searching the 911 forums I know that mine is dual row IMS, which is supposed to be stronger than single row but there is no upgrade solution for dual row IMS.
I looked in to the service history of the car and found there was an engine oil leak fixed at 70k km (back in 2007). The repair job included “engine removed and installed”, “sealing ring F cranks. Flywh” and “bearing cover F intermed shft”. I have attached a scan copy of the service record.
So folks does that mean the RMS and IMS issues of the car have been addressed? Mine is a tiptronic tranny.
I also note the AC compressor was replaced at 78k KM andwater pump was at 80K km. The 996 (and the owner) seemed to have difficult time from 70K to 80K km......

Yes. Me thinks you worry too much. You probably had a rear main seal fixed, not too unusual. If you are worried, get an extended warranty and drive the snot out of it. Otherwise, just don't worry and enjoy your dream fulfillment.

Hi there
If you are really worried. Check out IMS guardian on LN Engineering web site, it detects small bits of metal in the oil and gives you warning before it fails so you can have your Ims done , there is one to fit dual row LN do this too, this should help you chill out, also if the underside of your engine where it meets the gearbox is damp with oil, this is a sign also. In general though these engines go without warning with the Ims so be careful. I would go guardian and regular oil changes every 6 k
