Something thin so it doesn't attract much gunk again. Hey just a guess but what dyu think about WD40? Or dyu think that would be too thin for the job? Or gun oil under pressure.

For lubing cables on motorcycles I used to hang the cable vertical with the cable in a funnel spout sealed then filled with oil and let the oil make its way through the opening in the cable and drain through into a catch pan on the floor. This would over time remove any dirt and lube the cable. Then I'd remove the oil and let the cable continue to hang to let the excess oil drain away.
At other times I'd just replace the cable. Often the cable is not that expensive and of course it comes pre-lubed with whatever lube (probably grease of some kind) the maker deems best.
