totaled 996

Hey guys!

I've been a long time lurker. But I have decided to tackle a new adventure...

I'm beginning to budget a new build... and it'll involve a 996.

How much should I expect to pay for a totaled 996? I'll be ok as long as the roof, frame and engine are ok.

The reason is because I'm going to do a 997 wide-body conversion to it. I have access for the whole kit for really cheap due to where I work, and that should cut a lot of the cost of the build.

I am planning of doing most of the work myself, and have contacts with reputable body shops in the area in the case that I'll need anything...

Time is not really an issue, I have one car that I use to go to work (a whopping 1 mile away).

Any tips you guys would want to share with me?

Thanks,

Danny

I wouldn't, as you would pay more repairing it than you can get a good used one for. You could get an older 996 for less than 15K if you look around.

I understand that point, and that's something I've been debating on...

On the other hand... why buy a car with good body panels when I'm not planning to use them?

You can re-sell. The other consideration is if you go the totaled route you will have a "salvage title" which no matter how good your work is will diminish the value if you ever decide to sell. If you Google Porsche with salvage title you'll have lots of options.

I agree,

I usually under value my work, because it doesn't cost me any money, when in fact, if you add your time as money the amount invested will surely be a lot.

That's why I'm trying to look at both sides of the coin... In all honesty, it is not the first salvage car I've owned, and I'm not really planning to sell it anytime soon or use it as an investment.

That one looks good for someone who can do the work themselves. Bet you could get it all for under 10K

Exactly my initial thought, when I was going through first few sentences.
