If the filter is very dirty, overly oiled, or still have water in it from cleaning, it could have adverse effects on performance.

Im guessing the previous owner of the filter may have not washed it correctly, when I took it out of the car the smell of the filter was strong and it was fairly hot even after a 10min drive??

Here a thought.....bite the bullet and get a new on, either K&N or BMC. I would seem to me the one you have is toast anyway.

I think you might be right...

Back onto the cap for a second, does the helmholtz resonator create stability for the MAF according to this document it does more than muffle the sound:



Although I'm curious that Porsche built a variable flap on the 997 3.8. Makes me want to do this mod when I read that not at the expense of any power loss even if it's minimal. Although in the later series 996 the service manual says the MAF was redesigned so maybe the able do doesn't apply to later 996s?
