Thumbs up Back in the market for a 996?

Wife has agreed that since I hate her 2004 Benz CLK500 cab that maybe we should get a 996 again so we have a convertible that we both like (and sell the Benz). We don't like the 997 so that saves us some dough.

I'm thinking 2002, as I want the turbo style headlights, cab (c2, c4 or c4s), preferably black with beige interior, though triple black will do as well.

Anyone know of a cherry one out there for a good price? I'm assuming these are around the $50k+ mark these days, depending... some of these were probably bought in late '01 so may be just out of or very shortly out of warranty (which is fine since I will have it serviced at a private shop since I hate the friggin local dealer).

I keep thinking maybe S2000 or something, but I loved my 2000 cab (now I wish I kept it darnit), so figure an '02 should fit the bill.

So if anyone knows of a good one lemme know!

Welcome back Scott! You should reconsider the 997. I sold my 2001 996 cab to get the 997S cab and this is a far superior car. If looks is the issue, performance will win you over. Drive it before you pass on it. Everything I hated about the 996 is fixed and then some.

Part of the reason I want an older Porsche is I dont want a car under warranty, because the local dealer sucks *** and I want to go to a private repair shop (but dont want to if things are under warranty). Next closest dealer is >1 hr away, and they're not very good either. Prob closest decent dealer is 2 hrs away.

But, I do hate the look of the 997, and think they're overpriced. For once I want to miss out on all of that depreciation.

Take advantage of the depreciation and go for a used TT!

Kirby has a cab?

I have an 02 cab and I think you'll love an 02. (not selling mine) What does your wife dislike about the CLK500? I don't like it's styling which is worse than the old CLK body style. The only thing superior in the new CLK is the electronics (nav namely).

Something to consider is that a pristine black can be harder to find since black shows everything, especially plain black. Did you look on eBay? I bought mine for $56k w 17k mi a year ago on eBay (very good price I think). I would venture a sensibly optioned 02 cab should be around $52-58k dep on mileage. You should make sure it comes with heated seats (mine didn't and that's the only thing I miss). Bose, xenon, 18", windstop are mandatory as well.

My wife likes her CLK, I just think it's a POS. Hers doesnt have the Nav, its one of the first ones out "Designo" edition. I never drive it and she suggested we get a convertible that we both like to drive.

I've looked on ebay, there is one with very low miles (under 5k) but I havent heard back from the selling dealer yet. It's near Chicago.

I also never use heated seats -- wife likes it but I have it in all of our cars and I hate that feeling.

I think I know exactly how you feel. My wife has a '05 S500 with the sport package. It looks great and I love the way it looks but it drives like crap. It probably has to be one of the most mind numbing experiences out there. It has decent power when you rev it out but it sounds ridiculous in a luxury sedan. The car is smooth and solid but at the same time everything is stiff and non responsive. The throttle, the steering, etc etc etc. The SL500 is a little sportier but still, it's mindnumbing. I tell everyone who asks and even those that don't. "I HATE driving my wife's car!" I only drive it if I absolutely have to or if she needs a car wash and gas.

Good move getting back into a Porsche!

Thanks guys. In no hurry as winter is about to set in and our 1/2 mile driveway is still a construction zone for the next 6 months or so... but kinda thinking I might want to get into a C4S cab this time... depending on how much they cost. Turbo Cab would be nice but I dont want to spend that much, again.
