About to buy my 1st porsche

hey all,
I have been around for quite some time. Everytime I have gone to purchase a 996, I have walked away with another car (S4's, SRT8's, Golf R ect..)

I am finally in a position with a few other vehicles in my possession to own my dream "toy" car if you will.

My goal is to install a suspension kit (H&R or Bilstein) and the muffler mod to sounds like PSE.

*My biggest question is when I have gone to test drive it, the transmission seams hard to engage into gears compared to my VW/Audi's. Granted it was 22 Degrees outside, But I did let the car warm up for 10 minutes prior to driving. Is this a concern? Or do all porsches just feel more "engaging" if you will when selecting a gear? I would hate to buy a car only to have a transmission problem shortly after. This particular dealer is a Porsche Service company in my area, but at times has 3-4 cars for sale. They are known to complete PPI's for other dealers in town. So I have a good feeling about them, I am just slightly nervous.

Well, Hello and welcome to the 996 forums. Let's do this, answer you questions one at a time, okay?

Please send pictures of the wheels that are on it now, I've never heard of "skinny" wheels, on any wheel change out you have to ensure the off-set is the same.
As far as the sound is concerned, I suggest the Fister/PSE Hack, I have it and it is perfect.
If you are looking at a C2 use the Bilstein shocks to lower, if it's a C4 the shocks are more beefy and you can go with H&R springs, which is what I did.

Yes the gears can be knotchy...DO NOT IDLE WARM UP A PORSCHE..Period.

Send some pics of the wheels, if you have the twistys, they are the turbo twists wich are light and a magnisiam alluminum alloy, don't get rid of them unless they are distroued.

If I can help any more contact me.

Merry Christmas, Jim

Its an 03 with Sports seats and the dealer will be putting the skinny 5 spoke "performance" wheels and new tires on the car for free if I purchase it. Car currently has the twists on it. The dealer will also complete the 60,000 mile schedule maintenance for Free as well.

The car is a C2 with the twists, however much reading lead me to believe the skinny 5 spoke was an optional "performance" wheels as shown on the 40th anniversary.

*unfortunetly it appears the dealer sold the car last night and I was going to head in Monday to purchase....

Here is a runner up car I was looking at. Does it scare anyone this car only has 37,000 miles?? I've heard these cars are more reliable the more they are driven

I find myself in a similar position, and a similar location…

Looking @ my first Porsche purchase (996), and in Colorado. Which P-car service company were you visiting to look at used cars?

Jim,

You caution about idle warming up a Porsche… can you elaborate? I'm new to P-cars.

I spent considerable time in the Harley world, and lots of folks like to fire up their bikes and romp on the throttles right away and they wind up with rocker box, head & base gasket leaks prematurely. I've always warmed up my 2-wheeled V-Twins on the side stand until I feel warmth at the rocker box covers.

I would have assumed idle warming up a Porsche would be a good idea.

Hey bud, it is called Poudre sports car in Fort Collins, they complete PPI's for all the neighboring dealers.

There are 10+ 996 for sale in Colorado right now with most being C4s, which I originally wanted, then I decided on a C2. However I could get a 4s then disconnect the front wheels

The car I was going to buy was only $22k and had sport seats, so I'm pretty bummed it's gone when I spent all last week with the dealer

Sure, what you should do is start the car then drive it right away, keeping the RPS under 3k at most until the engine temp has come up then the engine is ready for full enjoyment. This also helps the transmission fluid come up to temp, if you idle warm the engine and then stomp on the throttle the transmission fluid is still cold as are all the other fluids. Best to drive "normally" untip the coolant hits 180* so it can tolerate all tolerances.
Also, the owners manual says in several places not to idle warm up.

LOL - I was just communicating with Zach about C2's and C4s… I was wondering if it was Poudre.

I'm planning to go visit him next week. I agree - I got a good feeling from them too. I like that they are a service shop with 40 years of experience.

We should start a new 996 owners club in Denver area LOL. I hope you find the right car. I'm trying to do the same. I think a good PPI is really important as well as as much history as we can get on the car. It looks like we're both in the same price range and looking at the same cars. That low mileage C2 is really pretty. I also would be worried about such low mileage. But a good PPI will tell a lot I think...

yup - makes sense.

With all my fuel burning toys, I make sure they're warmed up gently before really enjoying their potential.

I would have a dealer do the PPI, I'd never buy a car where the seller did thier own PPI. The PPI is for you and your information, not the sellers. If it comes back with any issues you can use it to negotiate. If the seller did thier own you may never know the true state of the car until you buy it, then too late.

Zach at Poudre is a great guy, I may see if he can find me another 03' as Booth motors (who has 4) 996's has somewhat a bad reputation

We will keep in touch!

Well, you could always have Zach do the PPI Honestly, I don't care who I buy from - I just want to buy the right car and have the right stuff in place to take care of that car.

If you want to get together and compare 996 notes sometime, let me know.

I am kind of in the same boat, I have (4) mods I want to do to any car I buy

-sport/race seats
-shift boot/shift ****
-suspension
-fister muffler mod

Other than that, keep it clean and drive the **** out of it!

*i just found out my home refi is going to close on the 12th, so I can't make a purchase before then without it affecting my refi. My goal is by February to have a 996 in my garage. So excited. I am just stuck on the way a Porsche feels over my Audi/VW's

This one looks promising IMSB and new clutch, still want an indy PPI. Anyway, if I lived in snow country I would lean more towards the C4S, awesome machine, I love mine. Okay, it's 2 10ths of a second slower but IMO rock solid, all the components of a turbo except the turbo, and rear quarter panels, same all around and shares the same frame as the GT2 and GT3

I wanted an 4s, (due to weather) but I own a 400hp Golf R, Infiniti G37x sedan and a 2015 GMC Sierra ... So my AWD basis are covered.

I finally want my RWD Porsche I've been dreaming of for 8 years.

But with much appreciation for your help, I do recognize where you are coming from. And in reality the G37 or the golf R may go in place for the Porsche due to garage size...
