I wanted to mention, that after trying to buy new coils for my 996 from Pelican parts since last Fall, they are always out of stock except for the Porsche brand at $87.ea.

Shipping was reasonable with tracking. I like to buy parts when I need them, not when they might be available later, sometime!

I found the same with Pelican Parts. They were out of a cheaper water pump (OR WERE THEY?) and it forced me into buying the much more expensive Porsche brand from them. Thanks for your link in your posting.
We apologize for the inconvenience as this is a very popular part that gets ordered through us frequently. We expect a large inventory of stock on the 996 Beru Coils Thursday ($37), which do include 2 bolts with each individual coil so that you do not have to purchase the updated extended bolts separately.
Dumb question here.... How would I know when I need to replace my coils? My car has 72,000 miles on it.
Typically, it's good to inspect when them doing your plugs for any signs of cracking. If you're not getting any signs of a bad coil like misfires, etc. then you should be fine. You can, however, replace them as a preventative measure.
From what I have read and makes sense, is to consider age not just mileage.
I have a question that I hope a technical person can answer.
Factory Porsche parts now use coil packs from 997 as the replacement part for 996.
Does anyone know with certainty, is there an increase in voltage output on 997 vs 996 coil packs.

To our knowledge, they're the same. It's just the shape of the transistor housing, which is different.
For sure bad coils could cause a misfire; I had a cyl. 1 misfire after a big rain. After the engine reached operating temperature it went away, and the check-engine light would go out on it's own. Coils have a life expectancy; variable with driving, and weather conditions. New coils should be good for several years.
Are there any coil packs that are a higher voltage than stock, that don't cost $1000.
I have seen some on ebay, they are yellow and blue in color, but I don't see where any feedback is of people who purchased.
