A6 Mirror Install
A6 Mirror Install
I impulsively purchased this Autodim Audi A6 mirror for $60. I believe the mirror mount matches our 996s right? Does anyone know what wiring already exists inside the overhead console? This mirror came with the male and female harness so it shouldn't be too tough of an install. I'll need to decode the wires though. I'm surprised there are 6 wires. I know there usually is a switched ignition, ground and reverse wire (to negate) but have no idea what all the other ones are for.

The seller on ebay was kind enough to send me this.
Here's what I have from my notes. I took them a few years ago so you might want to check the internet to see if what I have is right.
Pin 6 - brown/black - door open ground signal
Pin 3 - blue/red - reverse
Pin 1 - black/blue - power
Pin 2 - brown - ground
Pins 4 & 5 I have as side mirrors (not used)
I'm guessing all it really needs is ignition (Pin 1) and ground (Pin 2). Reverse is nice to have as it negates the auto dim when in reverse. It also has a "door is open" negation too. I'm good with skipping all the negation ones. I'm a little nervous taking off the original mirror. Don't want to destroy the windshield.

Installed it today. It was pin 1 and 2 as power and ground respectively. I used the switched power from the sunroof (green/brown) and ground from dome light (brown). I will need to trim the black plastic wire cover to fit but that should be an easy cut.

Very nice! Is there a separate mount on the window that is slides into or do you adhere it with an auto parts kit?

The mirror itself is a direct fit to the Porsche 996 mirror mount. The mirror has a non-removable flat metal piece to which the black wire cover snaps on to. So you just need to physically install the mirror, rotate it on and the metal piece runs vertical and fits behind the overhead console. With the black plastic cover off off, you can use a hand saw to trim it down to size and just snap it on. Technically the cover has clip points on the bottom and top. When I cut it down, I lost the upper clip points but it stays just fine with only the lower ones. Not sure if that made sense or not. Works well but with my rear window tinted it probably wasn't that necessary.
