HI guys.
It's time to replace my clutch, dealer quoated me for $1800.00 for clutch only and if flywheel needs to replace, another $1000.00 addition, does it sound right for that price???? anyone here can refer me to a nice shop in LA area or OC area??? thank you very much.

go to www.specclutch.com. you can buy a stage 3 or 3+ clutch which is better than your stock Sachs clutch for about $500. have it installed and flywheel shaved for $800 at motorworks on Robertson. he was the head mechanic at porsche, this is his own shop. he did mine.

I assume you have a 996?

If so, it is a 4 hour job to R&R a clutch & pressure plate. the average burdened labor rate here in california is about $135/hr, so there is $540. A replacement Sachs Clutch plate, Pressure plate, and throw-out bearing are about $500.

Removing the flywheel is another 5 minutes. However if the flywheel needs to be trued at a machine shop, the car could be out for a few days. A new replacement from Sachs is another $250.

So $1000 is reasonable, $1250 if the flywheel is replaced.

How many miles do you have on this clutch? The OEM Porsche parts are made by Sachs and should last at least 100K miles if operated in a normal manner.

Why do you think "it is time to replace my clutch"?

No the clutch on a 996 does not last very long anywhere from 15k-40k driver dependent obviously. I had my replaced at BH Porsche for $1175.

(Jess this is Larry you installed my home alarm)

I am on my same clutch after 62000 miles and its still firm as ever.
I have had it checked many times too. I drive hard too. I guess Im not a clutch rider.

Have you confirmed that the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder does not have air or moisture in it? This time of year when the first cold weather happens, a slave cylinder that has old fluid in it can be slow to fully engage the clutch plate which will exhibit slipping.

If you have never had the clutch circuit bled, and the fluid replaced (it uses brake fluid), then I would recommend that first before going hog-wild on a clutch that might not be necessary.

Are you the 1st 2nd 3rd owner of this car? Do you use good clutch discipline? (no popping, riding the pedal, etc.) If so, then 20K is nothing for a clutch plate.

Does the car exhibit this slipping behavior consistently or only on occasion? Is the RMS/IMS seal still solid?
