Should I buy 996/997 Turbo?
Should I buy 996/997 Turbo?
Our site here holds such a wide variety of 911 owners. Some with and some without Turbos.
Are there major Reasons to stay away from the Turbo versions of our 911?
Personally, I'd like to move upwards from 300hp. I know I can add hp through chips, intakes and exhaust systems, maybe even hit 400hp.
Is it better to just move up in purchase vs. chipping and other add-ons?

Turbo is more reliable than the non turbo, no IMS issues and almost no real day to day issues at all. Had mine 4 years now no issues. Did have to replace the clutch slave and accumulator which is a known part that breaks. Was no big deal.
My car with just a tune made 430whp and 475ft/lbs. Add exhaust for another 30whp and 50ft/lbs. Sky's the limit from there. I raced my buddy in a 997 C2 and left him standing on the highway, may as well have been in a Kia.

You must however, or should at any rate, keep in mind the Turbo model is a much more expensive car. Just because you get one for quite a bit less than its MSRP (996 Turbos ranged from around $120K to quite a bit higher) it still costs like a $120K+ car to service.
Services for my 2003 Turbo always cost more than similar services for my 2002 Boxster, even though the parts count is the same, the fluid quantities used are the same or nearly the same.
Consumables cost more. The Turbo uses more fuel even when driven moderately. Insurance is higher. It is just a more expensive car to own and operate.

I'M also looking for a 996/997 Turbo. A 996TT if you don't mind +75K on the ODO is ~$35K a bargain IMO.
the 997TT are all in the ~$65K range.
From my research they seem bullet proof.

So even at $10k to add a turbo or supercharger to a well sorted NA car, I think you're still a bit ahead $ wise, if you disregard the future value of your car with aftermarket mods... so why else would you not go the turbo/charger route? Can the added hp grenade the engine, etc......??
