3.4 L engine issues, statics and replacement
3.4 L engine issues, statics and replacement
Aside from the usual banter from guys/kids who don't own a Porsche or a 996. Has anyone monitored the failures of the 3.4L in a scientific manner. I'm looking fro real statistics. IE - Liner issues, cylinder faliures, is #2 the weak cylinder (see link), etc.
What has been Porsche assistance, if any. Can the displacement be increased through a tested and proven kit?
It appears my #2 is done
Trying to decide what to do. New 3.6 motor or turbo would require a LOT of work - new harness and pedal clusters etc. Open to ideas.
Thanks for keeping this on a serious note.....pls!

what happened to your #2 cylinder? did the cylinder liner slip? was it catastrophic? happen on the track or on the street?
unfortunately, when a modern porsche engine is RR'ed it gets shipped back to the fatherland for analysis. i can only imagine the data is then considered "confidential".
Jayster,
That would be a great Idea if it makes financial sense. Do you realize the 3.4L does not use drive by wire, thus requiring new pedal clusters, complete wiring harness and other mods in addition to the motor. At first glance the cost seemed excessive, but I'm looking into it. Another 6speeder PM'd me about a conversion he's doing and I'm very interested in that option. Imagine a 2950lb car with a 3.8!!!
I've called several dealerships for price on a 3.4L X51 and have been told that's only available in Europe - anyone know differently?
Thanks all - **** I'll keep you posted with pics from the teardown and the cause.****

Racerjsz,
The X51 3.4 is Euro only. The '99 3.4s didn't have 3-gas, but my '00 3.4 does (not sure if the switch was made at the cotover to the '00s or not).
