Oil reccomendations

Just looking for some advice. I have a 2003 C2 with 105,000. Original engine was replaced by prior owner at 49,000 miles due to ims bearing failure. Clutch replaced at 68,000 miles.

Planning to get ims bearing changed at next clutch change. Currently I use Mobil 1 0W 40 European car formula and change the oil every 5000 miles and change and inspect the filter every 2500 miles. Filter always looks good.

Thinking of switching to Mobil 1 0W50. Any thoughts?

Don't think there is a Mobil 1 0w-50 oil. At least one on the Porsche approved oils list. There is a Mobil 1 5w-50 oil (not a typo for 15w-50!) that is approved.

(If you have a bottle of Mobil 1 0w-50 check for "A40" on the label. If you find this it is sign the oil is Porsche approved for use in its modern sports cars.)

I run this *5w-50* oil in both my Porsche cars.

But I live/drive where it doesn't get very cold.

Where it does get cold, -25C or colder, Porsche says to use 0w-40 oil.

Not sure how cold it gets where you live/drive but you want to be aware 5w-50 may be too "thick" for the ambient winter temperatures in your area.

If ambient temperatures aren't a problem where you are you can run 5w-50 oil.

Or if ambient temperatures are a problem (it gets too cold) and you are willing to switch between "winter" (0w-40) and "summer" (5w-50) oils -- I did for a while but found it a pain -- you can run 5w-50 oil in the summer and 0w-40 in the winter.

Even though I run 5w-50 I still change the oil every 5K miles.

[QUOTE="edes300;4589624"]I found it on Amazon. Its says for racing use only.

I live in Pittsburgh but don't drive the car in the winter. I do take it on the track 2 or 3 times per year. Around local driving I usually am in the 3 to 5 thousand rpm range.

And that is what is is for, racing. Do not use unless you track the car and change the oil after every session.

I highly recommend DT40 it was made specifically for the Porsche engine, if you don't want to go that route go with the Shell brand made from natural gas, with both you can't go wrong

DT40 or the Shell Ultra Premium made from natural gas. DO NOT use racing oil as it's only made for the track, one time use. Unless you plan on tracking the car and changing the oil after efery use.

Here is a drop box link to the ONLY side by side oil test that I have ever seen. It was recently updated and includes 195 different oil test. the Mobil 1 0w40 Euro Porsche approved A40 oil came in very good at #105 , the NEW Mobil 1 0w40 Euro "FS" Porsche approved A40 oil came in #3 !! It is the best strait out of the bottle oil that has been tested to date. The "old" Mobil 1 5w50 Porsce approved A40 oil tested #92 , but is better than the "old"0w40. The "NEW" mobil 1 5w50 A40 "FS" oil has not been tested as of yet, but I expect it to be the new number 1 out of the bottle oil. The "new" "FS oil bottle looks just like the "old" bottle except for the little "FS" to the lower right of "Euro".https://www.dropbox.com/s/i8zl548d65...0data.txt?dl=0 Credit to "540 Rat"

While DT40 ranked very high at 37 on this list https://www.dropbox.com/pri/get/OIL%...JCttJNLZJm5wit does not have any API designation and lists "high Zinc" package which indicates it is not suitable for Cat equipped cars. The new King of the hill is Mobil 1 0w40 Euro "FS" which recently came out and is ranked #3 (the best straight out of the bottle tested as of yet)
