Sounds like a bargain to me, if you plan to keep the car. After the current two years, any repair is on you! And one repair could easily exceed $1600.

As long as it is a certfied Porsche extended warranty you should be fine if you're keeping the car for at least 4 years. You never know what exactly you are getting with a used car. A warranty is a nice security blanket to have if something goes wrong (that is covered). The trouble with most extended warranties; they are very expensive and many things are not covered- not to mention the fact a lot of these companies are going belly up right and left. One common ploy you'll see in the fine print is a refusal to provide coverage for anything with rubber LOL(this would include RMS, multiple engine/trans components etc...).
I opted out of an extended warranty on my car, 2000 C2 22k miles, for various reasons. First, I have taken meticulous care of my car since new, it has never had any major mechanical problems. Second I try and do as many repairs/maintenance or upgrades myself as possible, having a full set of tools and the complete Porsche 996 service manuals ( and decent mechanical skills)helps. Third, I have 22K miles in 4 years with no major trouble, what is the chance of a major breakdown in the next 20K miles? Is it worth the $4000 bet I would be making with the warranty company (that's what I was quoted for 4 more years up to 100k), I don't think so. Last, I have had an excellent relationship with the service department and I would expect they would treat me fairly with any post warranty "good will" repairs, this has been common practice with Porsche and certain known problems.
just my .02

I would advise you to go with the warranty just for peace of mind and being protected in case of the infamous RMS.
