Battery Options

In the past 3 months my battery has died twice and needed to be jump–packed back to life once…. It seems to have half the cranking power of my fathers 01….

I want to know does any on use Optima batteries?
OR
What kind of batteries are 6speeders using?

Regards,
Eric

Go to Sears and buy a DieHard....There are reliable, dependable and will last beyond their warranty...and are reasonably priced.....It's the only battery I will buy for all my cars including my 996....

If you're looking to save 40+ lbs the dry cells work well. I use it since I TT my car.

i have a optima red top in mine, like mentioned it saves you some weight and i simply modified the stock batt tray and made a alum stip to retain it, it fits fine, and does the job, i got mine on special at walmart, they are great about warrenty replacement too so thats another reason i went with them.im an offroader too, and lots of the guys in that world swear by them due to the power, weight and vibration durability... make sure you go with a red top, if you decide on optima, the blue top is a marine application batt, and the yellow top is a deep cycle, good if you have a huge sound system or a winch, like the offroaders do, but the red top is primarily a starting batt. Where did you get an aluminum plate made in the correct size? I went the route of a plastic plate because I couldn't get anyone to cut me an aluminum plate for a reasonable price.

Oggie, im a hobby metal fabricator, so its just a piece that i had kicking around i simply used a strip of 1/4" alum, thats 1.5" wide and drilled the ends to accept the bolts. finally i made a quick pass over it with the angle grinder and a fine flap disk to give it a pretty brushed finnish...im sure any metal supply place would cut one for less then $10

My Battery finally gave up the ghost last night and I have decided to go with the Optima as well. I have access to a Laser machine and plan to have a tray cut for my battery (as soon as I get the measurements properly documented in AutoCad). How many folks out there might be interested in a custom tray? Send me a pm or email if you have an interest.

I would recommend Odyssey, not only is it lighter and a dry cell battery (which can be mounted any way - not only upright) and is compact. its about 1/3 of the size of a normal standard battery. I had this in my evo8 and saved about 20 lbs of weight and made room for my intercooler piping. It saves a lot of space!

here is a picture I found on the net. Its the same size.

chrisp3, If you go to the link below, you'll see the instructions that I wrote up, as posted on Rennlist. There, I provided the exact dimensions for the plastic plate that I used. Note that although I used a group 34R (reversed polarity), others have been able to do the install with a regular group 34, which is easier to obtain.

Battery Tray

Thanks Oggie....I went ahead and measured the original tray and have sumitted the drawings to the fabricator for prototyping. I kinda went overboard and went for the custom model by designing a piece that follows the original form of the OEM battery tray and have also added some scalloped hold down plates that have the same shape as the Optima battery. This will help make the battery a bit more secure and will also limit stress on the battery case caused by the bolts and washers that actually hold the plastic battery case to the tray.

Should have the prototype in hand by tomorrow and will be in a better position to understand what the costs to build this will be.

My first run....after I confirm that everything fits will be for 10 pieces. 7 are already spoken for. If I get any more interest I could certainly raise the number based on participation. Anyone interested should drop me an email cp3@pcarmods.com.

Thanks

Could you post a picture of the prototype when you have it in hand? I'm picturing a plate that goes around the Optima, following the contours, which then fits into the Porsche battery tray and bolts in just like the original battery.
