Plastic plugs for intake/airbox

Met another Porsche guy this weekend at a GTG and he was telling me about some sort of plastic plug you can install into the intake that cuts off that elbow pipe? He said he had an extra set and gave them to me.

WOW....talk about a difference! It's like I have the sound of a CAI now. Throttle response "seems" to be better as well as top-end roll-on. I love the sound!!

Have any pictures of install? I too ordered these plugs, but haven't figured out how to install them.

TIA

All I got were the 2 plugs. No instructions but it's easy....take the intake pipe off (I took it all the way off...only 3 hose clamps) and insert one plug into the airbox hole (the plug only goes in one way) from the outside. Then put the other plug up into the elbow (smaller OD end first) piece until it sits on the molded ledge inside the tube. Just make sure it's securely fitted/seated so when you put the hose back on to the airbox, it doesn't shift and possibly get sucked into the throttle body!!

Wish I had a better explanation but it's really just a matter of blocking off the two holes with the 2 plugs.

If this isn't the right way to install these...someone please let me know!

Just get a # 273-1P cap plug from a company called Niagara , in Erie , PA . Pull off the rubber side bridge hose from the air box, drop in the cap plug , reinstall the hose and you have accomplished two things : bypassed the noise police required intake noise suppression resonator to improve induction sound above 4500 rpm and possibly smooth air intake from the MAF path.
Ask them for a sample and they will send it to you free (online form). Works on all 99-03 9x6 motor 996s . Lot cheaper than the Fabspeed , even if you add a BMC filter and pop out the plastic screen before the MAF sensor - just don't remove the wire screen . Also, I'd cover the holes in the lower right of the bottom of the air box that does nothing more than draw hot air from the right muffler area - defeats the purpose of the cold air snorkle that feeds from the engine lid, IMO Don't worry - there are separate water drain holes in the bottom of the box, away from heat. Niagara Plastics

You can remove both screens... the big plastic one and the metal mesh screen (at least Loren and I did). So go ahead and remove the metal one also.... any object has to get through you air filter BEFORE it goes through those screens..... And if something ever gets through your airfilter (it never will happen when properly installed)..... you have bigger problems to worry about. Just remove both.

FWIW, my car hated having the screens out. It sputtered at low rpms giving it any gas. It also took 2 tries to start cold. Idled rough until warm. (Note: "cold" is subjective in 80-90 degree garage in Az summer.)

I put the screens back and installed the plug. Sounds great, runs great, no problems.

So there is definately a noticeable improvement with sound and throttle response doing this plug thing???

I could not tell a difference in speed, but did notice a little in sound. That was before my PSE. If you have any sport exhaust no need to do the cap mod because you will no longer hear it. You could still do the screen removal though.

I don't think so. I've only heard of it being done with NA 996s, but you may wat to shoot Loren a PM just to make sure.

We never got much of a response, but Ghost Rider on Rennlist gave it a try and wrote up the directions with pictures....

Is this the correct procedure?

Yeah, that's it. I used both caps simply because without the one up inside the hose/tube, air can still get trapped and I wanted to get my airflow as smooth as possible.
