Nitrogen v O2
Nitrogen v O2
Came across a new shop today in WLA, Lucent Motors and they have a Nitrogen machine that inflates your tires instead of air. Has anyone heard of this before? The guy says it is better than air because it does not leak like air and is not affected by the elements like heat or cold. The guy who owns the place apparently was the head installer at CEC.
Any thoughts?

Nitrogen is good, but the guy at the shop needs to have a refresher course in high school physics. The biggest advantage to nitrogen is that you don't get as much change in tire pressure (and temperature) at the track. The biggest contributor is not the gas itself, but the lack of moisture/water vapor which comes from using tank-supplied gas vs compressor-created air. You will do even better if you use an air dryer like one of these, which may be what they are using.

We have a few tyre shops here advertising Nitrogen's benefits...
Some claims include: Better quality ride, Less leaks, Tyre pressure variations kept to a minimum etc etc...
Most of the claims are a bit of a joke. Even the Tyre pressure argument - unless your on the track.
In normal street driving, the Nitrogen argument does not hold up. Take for example the claim about tyre pressure. Unless your on the track your tyre pressure differential is not going to be that much because you never run the tyres hot enough to cause substanial tyre pressure changes.
In day to day use, Nitrogen filled tyres become a hassle as you just cannot adjust tyre pressures that easy unless you have some Nitrogen in your back pocket. That means having to get your tyres filled at the local tyre shop and they then charge you to fill the tyres $$$$$....They buy Nitrogen in bulk (ie. cheap) but charge way too much for a fill.
If you could fill your tyres with Nitrogen easily and conveniently as normal air then go for it otherwise it is just throwing away your money.
To minimise water vapour etc, make sure you have a filter and moisture trap setup on your home compressor - this is an inexpensive attachment and all air comps should have these as a standard setup.
