996 vidcam mount?
996 vidcam mount?
Hey Everyone-
(I apologize if this has already been discussed, but the SEARCH function doesn't seem to be working very well...)
On Wednesday, May 10, my Father and I will be taking his 996 C4S (and my X5 4.4 Sport!) to Thunderhill Raceway up in the middle of Nowhere, California -- otherwise known as Willows
-- with NASA for an all-day open track event.
Question: to the best of my research thus far, the only suitable place to put a video camera mount is on the rear childseat anchors. But this poses two problems:
(1) the mounting bar needs to be custom made; and
(2) my Father does't like the idea of cutting through the carpeting to expose the child seat anchors.
Do any of you have any other ideas -- other than suction mounts which are prohibited my NASA -- for video camera mounts?
Thank you,
--Marc

I haven't found anything simple if you don't have a rollcage. Harness bars are the only likely solution, Brey-Krause mounts to the rear shocks and seat belt. There are also a couple of more simple harness bars that mount to the front seat belt shoulder swivel things.
The other possibility I have looked at are the bullet cams, since they are lightweight, less mass to mount and you can put the camcorder somewhere safe like in the center console. If you have the euro GT3 seat, might be able to strap the bullet cam onto the harness loop above your shoulder, maybe with a hose clamp or something. Otherwise, I've thought about trying to figure out some way to attach a custom built (ie home hack job) mounting arm for the bullet cam off of the rear end of the center console, hooks on the back of the seats, or the coat hook mounts... nothing obvious or simple.

I run this in EVERY NASA race here in AZ with no issues -

Oh yea, I didn't think about the external suction mount bullet cameras. I was only thinking about mounting solutions for inside the car in a location where you can see your steering inputs and stuff.

I use a suction mount as well, and they work great. But if you're using a full size camera (not bullet cam), I recommend not mounting it outside of the car. The wind resistance can cause you to loose suction.
thank you guys for the suggestions, but nasa really will not allow suction mounts unfortunately
which is REALLY a shame because i recently purchased an EXTERIOR suction mount for my miniDV sony camera to attach to the rear of my X5: it makes an AWESOME reverse-chase-cam car
