my first pcar, questions ????

at the moment, i own an 06 STi which i love to death. out of the box, the car has immense potential which i have only come to fully use on the track. i have always been, however, a porsche lover and i am seriously considering getting rid of my sti for a MY99 996. i know it might not be the smartest move - financially that is, given that i am currently in the steep part of the depreciation curve - but something in me really wants a carrera; i have loved them for as long as i have loved cars, and the 996 holds a special place in my heart given that it was carrera i lusted after when i first got my liscense (im only 22). for those who have driven both, can you remark on the ride quality difference (in terms of comfort). also, what ought i be weary of when looking at used 996s?? i want a 996 with the aero package, but am otherwise indifferent to color - as long as its a 6mt - so what can i expect to pay price wise (assuming >50k miles)?? also, what do 996 owners think of the 99 v. 02 MY??? the 3.4 litre motor in the MY99 seems enticing given the low weight of the car (~2900 lbs if i am correct). my plans for the future would include handling and weight reduction mods so the power diff doessn't bother me. i am very much track orriented and this car would be tracked often, but would also be a dd, although i have other cars available for snow, etc ... many thanks in advance.

This topic comes and goes, I vote is always to do what makes you happy!

P-cars are compared time and time again but they wouldn't be anything to compare to if others didn't feel they were ever a threat...

Good Luck,

-Eli

I've got a '99 and love it. Find a certified pre owned one and get some kind of warranty on it. The car is timeless and you'll be a porshcefile forever, at least until you can afford the Murci.

The STi may be faster but Porsches are great driving cars. They combine great ride quality AND superb handling and they feel rock solid for years and years and lots of miles. Not to diss the STi but they are noisy as hell, rough, and unrefined (perfect for a 22yo) but they do haul *** and handle really well.

I would think you could go nearly as fast on the track with the Porsche, or at least fast enough for you to get that fat slobbery grin on your face everytime you punch the throttle out of corner.

Do what makes you happy. You can always get more money.

In a few years we'll all look back and say, "Remember when '99 996s were so cheap??? What a screaming deal they were!"
