Another IMS leak, need help
Sorry for the double-post on RennTech...
I recently took my MY02 C2 cab in for its 3rd oil leak, which again appears to be coming from the IMS seal (I'm told that the RMS is unaffected). The problem, however, appears to be more complex than expected. There is a ball bearing within the crankshaft casing which was likely to be defective from the time of initial production. The remedy now is to replace the entire crank shaft structure which abutts the IMS. I'm not very savvy w/ the entire mechanics of the car, but this sounds like an entirely new problem that I have never heard of. I was wondering if anyone has ever had this problem? If so, is there a permanent fix? Also, has anyone been successful in getting a new car through the Lemon Law or Magnusson Warranty Act? I bought my car, intending to keep it for its lifetime. But now, with these persistent problems w/ oil leaks, I'm wondering if they will continue beyond my warranty coverage or rear their heads again. I'm also not too keen on getting my engine replaced (although the dealer has not yet offered this).

i had an IMS bearing go bad on my '98 boxster which required a new engine. mind you, it wasn't a leak. the bearing disintegrated and chunks of metal may have been floating through the crank case so PCNA decided to replace the engine. if your bearing has failed then you may want to inquire about an engine replacement. if you are planning on keeping the cab for it's/your lifetime then why would you be against getting a brand spankin new engine?
I would rather fix my current engine definitively (an engine that I have broken in myself and not abused), rather than getting a refurbished one which I hear happens when the engine needs to be replaced.
It was my understanding that Porsche provides a entirely NEW engine not a refurbished one. I could be wrong but that's what I thought I read on other posts where the RMS issue arose. I'd be curious to find out the correct answer. Plasticman, can you check with your dealer?

I'll check w/ my dealer about the possibility of changing out my engine, but like I said, they have not yet offered this as a solution to my problem. Apparently, it should be reparable w/o a new engine. I'll keep everyone posted. I'm also looking into possibly qualifying for the Lemon Law or the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
