If you're up for the drive out, I'll be there all day Saturday. I'm in car 52.

also PSE is a very well known fav for everyone. it gives you the ability to switch on and off if need or would like to do so, BUT it gives no performance AT ALL, and .......
I will disagree with you on the " no performance at all " improvement part.
Just because Porsche does not make the same ridiculous HP claims as the aftermarket types do, does not mean there is none.
The Porsche mufflers consist of three chambers ( stock and PSE mufflers alike)
Normally the exhaust goes thru all three before exiting.
With PSE on loud , it exits already from the first chamber and bypasses the other two. Hence the more aggressive sound.
But it also means that there HAS TO BE less back pressure for the engine and therefore there should also be some HP gain.
How much ? well I don't think you get all that much from ANY muffler.
Especially not the outlandish claims made by the aftermarket types.
So get the PSE's ( or any other ) for the sound. Not the few extra HP.

the reason the PSE offers NO HP gain is because above 35mph the ECU defaults to the "cosed" position...for "noise regulations" - go figure!
The 9ff OTOH is fully manual, slectable via the cockpit mounted button.
The gain from an NA exhaust alone is negligible. Our Variotune system for the 996/997 adds 5HP (whoopee!!). Most people do it for the sound - which stays above 35mph (and low speed of course).
When combined with a 9ff Powerkit...up to 40HP can be seen. Of course REAl HP costs money. If you're looking for 23HP with a $500 filter...we cant offer that, but there are plenty others that do.

Actually , the factory setting closes the PSE's anytime from O to ~ 50 mph , depending on how agressively the throttle is used (at least that's how it works on my 997 S )
And, since a normally aspirated engine needs a little backpressure ( for torque) that's a good thing.
I get the extra torque at the lower speed , where I need it most for everyday driving .And above 50 MPH when the bypass valves stay open, I get a few extra HP when 2/3 rd of the mufflers get bypassed.
Hmmm... maybe those Porsche guys are not that stupid after all . Lol
Actually, my factory fit PSE only cuts out between 25mph and 45mph (2003 996 C2).
Have they really changed the setup on the 997 so that it doesn't activate until 50mph? Did I understand you correctly? That is shocking if it's correct.
One of the biggest smiles I get several times a day is when moving, sorry, roaring
, off in 1st gear. Nothing til 50mph is frankly pointless.......

it stays engaged until 35, 50 etc. then it closes.
I'm not trying to get more horsepower, I just want a better sound. Before I buy an exhaust I want to hear it, that's all. I'm not going to have it wired into the car. When I feel the need for horses, I'll step up to a turbo. Thanks for all the info.
I installed my PSE without connecting the speedometer wire that switches them to quiet mode. So now the dash switch allows me to have them quiet all the time, or loud all the time, no automatic cutout. All you do is not connect the wire to the gauge cluster when you install the switch and relay.
The 996 PSE operates in two modes.
1) Loud from 0-25, quiet from 25-45, and loud again above 45
2) Quiet all the time.
After modding the relay that controls the PSE (basically, disconnecting the signal from the speedometer), the two modes of my PSE are now:
1) Loud all the time
2) Quiet all the time
The explanation I received for the factory designed 25-45 cutout is based on the assumption that if you're driving between 24 & 45 mph, you're most likely in a residential area and don't want to disturb the locals. Sounds hoaky, but it is what it is.

I believe the button only existed when you get the PSE after the fact. But when you get it as aan option from the factory upon delivery, it doesn't have a button. All it has is a relay that controls the sound depending on your speed.
What I did with mine was to just completely remove the relay instead of modding it.. Always on, Always Loud !!!!

To throw another stick in the fire, I would recommend hearing the Dansk Super Sound before buying any exhaust- especially the PSE. I have it installed on my C4S and it's simply amazing. You're more than welcome to come by and hear it if you ever find yourself in San Diego.
