What I can address is a couple of other points that came up after your post.
- Don't know if a $700 Upsolute flash or a GIAC flash is your answer as on a stock NA car it may not be worth the money spent.
- If you decide to purchase the flash both can be done in a day in most cases. However, there are some differences: On some models the Upsolute may still require you to remove ECU to solder a chip. The GIAC only requires a download.
- Speaking from experience, decided to go with the GIAC for the following reasons:
1. No soldering
2. Solid reputation and results
3. You get what you pay for
4. Typically, you can't expect too much more from a GT3 as the factory has done a great job with the engineering of the power output of this car. Therefore, I decided only to reflash only after installing a good reputable full exhaust system (Utilizing a GEMBALLA) consisting of: Headers, 100 cell cats, larger dia. pipes and free flow mufflers. Uncorked the intake only with a K&N.
5. Which brings us to addressing the results:
- Smoother e-gas mapping. You can feel more response overall.
- Regained mid-range torque (that I lost after the exhaust swap) vs. stock
- Only slightly stronger top end vs. stock
- Dyno results echo the seat of the pants estimate: Estimate the flash added @ 10HP, don't know how much torque added but it is more noticable than the hp gains.
GIAC has a 30day $$ back guarantee. I decided to keep the GIAC reflash. Car now feels closer to the stock power and torque curve, only fatter throughout the entire rev band. Also, kept the stock mapping for red line at 8,200 RPM.
Hope that this helps to answer your questions.
P.S. This is too is my first P-car. Some people throw some bad attitude but, for the most part people are very nice. Hey, the ladies like it even though they don't know exactly what it is. They only know that it is a P-car.
Enjoy it.
This is great info thank you...regarding the rev. I am not PURPOSELY revving pass redline..I mean..during spirited driving..I like to change the gears when I want and I hate the engine kill as it comes on fast and hard and messes up the shift to 2nd. Does that make sense? I am not trying to blow the motor up...

I really appreciate the great info...you maybe right...since I am NA I should maybe reconsider....

Jeff_C is infamous around these parts
FWIW, I added mufflers (GHL Louds) and the K&N CAI on my '01 C4 Cab and I could definitely feel (note: I said feel not dyno) a difference after each change...THEN I tried a 5 hour test drive of the Revo Technik chip flash and all I can say is WOW! I loved it. It smoothed everything out and added bottom end (which I seemed to lose with the mufflers). As soon as I dig out of some other financial commitments I am definitely going to have it done permanently.

P-C4,
When I recently checked most Upsolute chips can be downloaded however, on some models (IE: GT3) still needed to have the Motronic removed and soldered.
As far as the drone, yes I have a slight one @3K RPM. Doesn't really bug me though as it is not that bad.

A-Image,
Didn't mean to sound like I thought you where bumping up on the rev limiter. I do understand what you are saying. Most stock cars don't gain any additional HP or Tq past the factory Red Line. Unless you've changed the internals by lightening and balance all recip parts there will be no benefit.

Yea, i get mostly a little resonance when i lift off the throttle and it is going down in the rpm range from 3-2K rpms. I havnt had the car at 2-3K and in 6th gear so i dont know if i get it there, i prob do though. i also notice a slight reonance when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear in this area. gemballa usa insists its normal but i guess ill just get used to it, its very slight. the sound is intoxicating though.

You just need to anticipate the redline a bit more...try getting to shift 200 rpm before you know it'll cut in.

I am going to practice it...and anticipate the engine kill. hahahaa...

I swear...this is the only car I drive and NOT listen to the radio. Sometimes I turn off the radio completely just to hear the engine. LOVING THIS CAR! I am almost at 10 days as a P Car owner! Yippeee!!

If your not looking at increasing the performance of the engine and just want the rev-limiter changed, just learn your car and shift sooner. The chip programs are going to give you more HP, then you will want a new intake system ,new exhaust and so on, and so on

just learn the shift points of your car

My 2 cents.

I had pretty much the EVO Stage 2 upgrade. A GIAC ECU chip flash alone isn't going to get you much. From what I understand the ECU chip flash is to allow your engine to take advantage of a more free flowing muffler as well as intake.

I got the AP Power exhaust (I like the low note), the Evo Venturi Intake (does not have the bad rep that some K&N filters have with MAS issues), and the ECU flash.

My car feels significantly faster and more free reving. Also sounds amazing with the howl above 4-5K+.

Thank you for the info...I think I made up my mind..the consensus seems to be pretty much the same across the board. NA 996 get little help from an ECU flash, unless you go crazy and mod everything else..even then with intake and exh your gains are not that great. So I think I am cool being stocker...all the reading I have been doing has said bang for the buck is NOT worth it on a NA car.

Donno... 25-30hp gain for me was a pretty big deal. Esp when I have only 300hp stock.

I agree that 23-30hp gain is GREAT! But...is it worth all the mods? The ECU is almost a grand...then you have the intake and mufflers. Add everything you did to get that 30hp...its probably cheaper to NOS it...get a 50 shot for alot cheaper.

I dunno...I may end up doing all the mods anyways...but when you put the numbers on paper..its kinda not worth it for the 30hp gain IMO.

DimNSlow are you in So Cal? Would love to check out your ride..and go for a spin in it to compare to my stocker.

I live in the SF Bay Area. Though I think there are probably many members down there that has similar setup.

Yeah... I agree... it is expensive. For example, giving the same HP bump, a supercharger for my S2K is $4K, while same for 996 goes from $9K to $20K for the RUF. But it is the part of owning a P-car.

I would say I spent ~$600 in the Evo Intake, ~$700 for AP exhaust, and ~$900 for the ECU flash. Not including labor. It is pricey, but this is the most bang you will get for your buck.
