problem with convertible top

Hi guys.

I recently took my c4s cab b/c the fuse for the top kept on burning out on me. The dealer diagnosed the problem to a relay switch, and know I can not operate the top when the car is moving below 30 MPH. They say this is the a "new safety upgrade". Those this sound right to you??? Or are they BSing me!!!!HELP!!!!!

AFAIK, the car has to be completely stopped and the E-brake applied for the top to operate, unless 997/987, as those have a new "on-the-fly" system.

That's what I was told, also. You could install the "Smart Top" if you want to operate the roof while moving below 30MPH.

The top would operate below 30 mph before thay changed the relay. Now it does'nt. How do you explain that?

I would show them what it states in your manual, if this was a new safety upgrade there should be a TSB for it. have them show it to you. Stealers suck!

TSB is a technical service bulletin. But don't get all happy just yet because that information will probably not help your situation. This "safety feature" is now in place because they installed a newer, updated part on your car. They installed the newer part because that's all they have on hand. You will be asking them to install an older part that they probably do not have in stock and can not get any longer because everyone has the new part. Most likely, they will not be inclined to spend ANY time helping you regain the convenience of operating your top at <30mph.

If the relay switch is in fact the part with the new "safety feature", you could shop around for an older relay that will allow <30mph top operation. Perhaps a wrecking yard will have a few. P.S. I have a 2003 cab and I can operate my top up to 30mph. I do it all the time in the parking garage as I pull into my parking spot.

I just got a reply from another dealership, and they said that there is no "safety upgrade" and that there must me something else wrong with the conv. controller. I knew that this service manager was full of BS!!!!

Finally got the problem with the top fixed. It turns out that when they changed the convertible top controller, they forgot to set it so that it will allow the top to operate below 30mph. I am glad i was persistant with the issue. Thanks guys for your help and advice!!!
