This is funny. The 993's come from the factory with an engine protection plate and a large number of those owners take them off.

The 996 does not come with a plate and it appears many 996'ers put them on.

I think some take them off for ease of service...the 993 is not an easy car to service in the first place...my 996 skid plate doe snot get in the way of service at all and does not need to be removed for oil changes or servicing...so I get all the benefit, and none of the hassles....

^ +1 (as it applies to the OEM plate. The aftermarket contraptions look a bit more complex).

Got it on mine since I had x74 suspension installed and glad I got it. I've definitely made contact with the ground, particularly after speed bumps.

I thought about putting on a plate but was concerned about heat retention so I asked the two master Porsche mechanics on their opinions. Both of them recommended NOT to use it due increased engine heat.

Theoretically could retain heat, but I have not noticed higher temperatures, although I have not been on a track since I've had it installed. However, it is a Porsche engineered part so I am not worried.

me too, although i have'nt scrapped my P-Car once yet. It was the best thing i did on my VW. You should have seen the poor thing after 1 year of use, my oil pan was less than a Inch from the ground and that Skid Plate was abused. Boy she looked good. SLAMATION NATION!!!

The overheating issue occurs only on the 993's. The 996's do not have the same problem.

the plate protection is invaluable for street cars but particularly on track in case you go.......off track and do some gardening (or worse). For $50 or $200 it seems a very inexpensive upgrade considering the worst case scenario.
