any reliability issues?
any reliability issues?
hello guys.
i usually post on off-topic or some other forums but here.
i got some questions that you guys here in 996 forum....
so the question is,
I am considering 99~02 996 for my next car that i will purchase in next year or two, (i usually start research this early for something i purchase.. weird eh?)
and i see a lot of 02's with reasonable price that i had in mind,
and the mileage on those typical price range seems like around 40k.
what i am trying to say is, that do you guys think I will have to pay
extra money in next year or two (after I buy one, I mean) for the maintenance other than simple oil change tire change and all that regular stuff? and also, I know Porsches are very reliable, but do 996s have any problems going over 50~60k miles for example?
sorry for confusing you guys with my lack of English skills.
"So if I buy 02 or so 996 in next 2 years with about 40~50k miles on clock, would I be worried about car breaking down or what?"
I guess that puts my question as simple as possible.
Thank you for taking your time on my stupid thread
but also Thank You again in advance for your input.
Helothere

let me get this straight:
1. you want to buy an 02 996
2. but you want to buy it in 2008 or 2009
3. at the time of purchase you want to have the 996 to have only 40k-50k miles on it.
which would make the 996 6 or 7 yrs old, would you be worried about breaking down? I dont know you well enough if your the worrying type.
will it break down ever? its a machine, yes.
should you be worried? its a machine, no.
dont wait, buy it now and enjoy.

so my main question was,
would it run without many problems like typical japanese cars run?
i know i am crazy looking at 40~50k mi for a 6,7 yr old car,
but i am just guessing if it will still run strong with more than 50k miles
unlike those italian cars...
and buying issues for now, i am still in process of paying off my current car,
and i need to get settled on new environment that i will be facing in few months, so it will eventually take about a year or so to get one eventually.
anyway thanks for your input, redridge..

todays modern car (especially porsche) 50K miles is nuthin. An indie opened up a blown motor over 100K miles (3.4 1998-2001 porsche) because of lack of oil, and found that the motor was practicaly brand new inside. they mentioned that in can easily run 200K mile. Its more of maintenance cost that you will get hit (like any other car). These cars a generaly dependable. Lots of people here are past 100K and still going strong.
I have a 996 thats turning seven with only 29K and its still just breaking in. By the time you get one, youll have a very nice deal. Just do a proper inspection and youll be fine...

I have an 02 I bought exactly a year ago with 27,000 mi on it. I paid $47,500 for it. I have done a few mods on it and I love the car with all my heart.
In the last year I drove it just under 10,000 mi. I’ve had to fix or repair the following items:
Cooling system overflow tank and the cap
Alternator
Battery
Ignition Switch
And I currently have a problem with my left front turn signal and yesterday my air bag light came on for no apparent reason.
The overflow tank is probably my fault. I have a very small, well insulated garage with very little in the way of venting. I would put my hard driven hot, car into the garage and close the doors on 90 degree south Florida summer days. I might as well have been keeping my car in the oven. The car couldn’t cool itself off and the plastic tank blew. Lesson learned.
The electrical issues are beginning to bother me. I hope this is not the beginning of a trend.
