Wheels too big?

Hey Guys, I’m fairly new to the site but have learned loads of info from reading the last week or so. I've had my car for about a month but don't have any pics yet.

The car is a 2001 996 C2 Narrow Body and I just put on some new wheels last night. This morning on my way to work I noticed that the car felt rough on the highway between 60-75mph anything slower or faster it was fine. I bought the set used with less than 25 miles on them, here are the specs. Fronts: 8 x 18 OEM Carrera’s w/Yokohama ADV Sports in 235/40 Rears: 8 x 11 OEM Carreras w/Yokohama 295/35. I’m going to take them in to have them balanced today but is there anything you all can think of that might cause the ride to feel rough at those speeds? Are the rears too big for my car?

What do you mean by rough? Are you getting a vibration? If so, have them balanced and see if that helps. I was getting a vibration in the steering wheel at certain speeds, but they were balanced properly so I bought new front tires and that fixed the problem.

Yes, vibration. I'm hoping they just need to be balanced and not that the rears are too big. I called and spoke to someone at Discount Tire about the size of the rears while they were still in transit, and the person told me they wouldn't fit. I figured I would try them on for grins and it turned out they fit fine with plenty of clearance. I'm wondering if they thought I was talking about putting 295/35's all the way around.

yep, if it vibrates only on those speeds you need high speed balancing and pray that its not bent...GL

Thanks Guys. As far as high speed balancing, can this be done by most tire shops or is this a specialty shop requirement? Also, will they be able to tell if they're bent when the balance them?

I hope not, but that would be a lesson learned buying sight unseen. Can bent rims be repaired?

I had a dent repaired on my SSR's. A cool $375.00 did the trick...

sounds like a balancing issue. i had a car that was new tires put on, the guys didn't do a great job balancing and it would vibrate @50-60 mph. it was fine above and below that speed. wheels were re-balanced and never had an issue with it again.

If they can't balance the wheel then more than not it's the wheel....

Most of the time bent wheels can't be seen by eye.... High speed Mircos will tell you the truth....

Both my rears were bent and I thought it was balancing, or just the way it the car felt.. I had them fixed - and refinished - for 160 a wheel. It feels like a completely new car. What a diff!

It turns out they were not balanced correctly, to quote the guy who balanced them yesterday, "Who ever supposedly balanced these was a total moron!". I'm glad that was all it was, however, now that I've seen them on during the daylight, I don't think I like the way they look. I know I know, there's just no pleasing a Porsche guy. By no means is this car a dreamcar compared to what I've seen on this site, but I want it to be as close to one as I can get it in both function and aesthetics. The 295/35's seem to stick out a little too much or perhaps it's the thicker sidewall, I just can't seem to nail it down. Anyone looking for a pair of Yokohama Advan Sports with less than 75 miles on them????

Thanks all for the many responses. I'll try and get some pics this weekend.
