i think it depends hn what kind of drifts there are many technichs to drift and some can be faster for the lab times and some were created for shows but the drifting actually came from racing (track) i believe in japan and now its more like a show

No, drifting came from the mountains, they had a lot of tricky corners and hairpins.

Ever see an F1 car or ALMS car "drifting" around a circuit?

Drifting is slow, smooth is fast.

No, but rally cars "drift" all the time. I think Drifting grew out of what we used to call "power sliding" back in the day. On SOME slower turns you can be faster if you toss the car into a slide by lifting or trail-braking, and getting on the power again while the *** is still light, and steer with your right foot. Even if it's not faster, done well, it is a thing of beauty.

I think it started on the dirt, flat tracks. I know I said I didn't like nascar, but I think that is where it started ( back in the late 30's and 40's).

I wouldn't call it drifting if it is on the dirt.

What would you call it (it's all oversteer) ? World of Outlaws drivers pitch it in at 100mph plus at the bigger tracks. Steering with the throttle isn't it the same? One is for show like ice skating, and one is for the world championship like the WRC.

I've drifted when drifting wasn't a contest some 15 years ago as we would do this in empty mall parking lots after late night runs....

If you have a line of cones layed out for a 1/10 of a mile and expect each driver to run down to the end loop around 180-d and return then I think you'll be surprised as to how much time can be saved because you can save the braking time down by transfering the engergy into a slide and direction correction.

I think we should have a contest.....

They oversteer for different purposes and that's what separates oversteer from Drifting!

What about racing on snow, I lived in a northern part of Ontario and I kicked my buddies butts on back roads drifiting our civics when we were in Highschool, they would try to drive throught the corner while I was "drifting" and I would kill them all.

No experience on the snow other than by accident in front of a CHP car ...

By the way, has anyone told you "your name is stolen"?

Flat track motorcycles scrub off all their speed with a slide - those bikes have NO BRAKES.

Tazio Nuvolari drifted his Auto Union all over the F1 circuits in the late 1930's even Monte Carlo. I'm sorry I didn't realize they were different. I hate to have a disagreement about something I don't like! I'm going to ask my wife about drifting.
