Question Vent sponge attack!

From time-to-time a coin-sized wafer of thin gray sponge blows forth from one of the wishshield air vents. No big deal.

Lately, this has become a steady avalanche of disintigrated sponge from all vents and has partially clogged one of my air vents.

Has anyone else experienced this? What is this crap and where is it coming from? I have to assume it is not mission critical, but it is mildly irritating. Are these air filter fragments?

Interesting and mildly funny..... My guess is the fresh air induction filter.

I think it's the lining inside parts of the air passage (a kind of "sponge gasket" where the plastic air-duct pieces join).
I've had this happen in one of my previous cars before, dismantled the air-ducts and scraped everything off, the sponge linings had deteriorated!
