150 Miles Above 100 today!
Awesome write-up.
Living in the middle of LA there is no hope of me going that fast around here... at least not without attracting blue flashing lights.
I totaly relate to your comments from my past days of sport bike racing, and reading your post made me think of that.
Looking back I still can't believe I was hitting those speeds on 2 wheels and am still alive...lol, but when I think of it I still rememeber how awesome it felt at the time. i'm such a speed junky.
Glad you got to experience that- Fun as hell eh??? and YEAH it does take some serious focus / effort at speed!
[edit] - wow this is odd- I wrote this AFTER John Romano's below post but it posted above it??

150 Miles Above 100 today!
I’m sorry this is going to be long, but it is about speed.
There is a desolate stretch of the Florida Turnpike that runs from Jupiter to the toll where you have to hand in the ticket, just south of Orlando. It is 150 miles of wide, fairly smooth, modern toll way with very long straights and very limited access - in the middle of nowhere. There is also very little cover for radar cops. You can see for miles ahead of you.
That is exactly where I found myself at the crack of dawn this morning, alone, under a bright blue sky. I was in 5th gear going 80 miles an-hour, the windows were up, the A/C was on, and there was nothing between me and the horizon but air. So I hit it.
I shoved in the clutch, smacked it down into 4th, let out the clutch and mashed my right foot. WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cabin lit up behind my head with an aural rush that is making my toes wiggle right now just remembering it. I grabbed 5th back at 6500 RPMs and stood on it again. The shortened throw from the B&M put me right back in the sweet spot in less than a second. I couldn’t believe it! The car was pulling like a freakin’ mad dog, shrieking back to redline like it was possessed. I grabbed 6th just past 6500 with another lighting fast shift and stood on it some more. I lifted at 161.
No, I have never gone that fast in a car before. I got down under 100 just as I crested a rise where trouble could possibly hide. There was nothing there though. There was nothing anywhere. So…….
I spent most of that stretch well above 100. Several blasts took me past 150. A lot of it was cruising between 130 – 140. I only slowed to between 85 – 90 (which felt like I was parked) when I passed big trucks, the service areas, and anywhere else there could be trouble.
For anyone that can’t imagine, the thrill of that hour and a-half jaunt (the possibility of going to jail not withstanding) was subordinate to the work it required. You have to really DRIVE at those speeds. Plus, there is also a lot to keep track of in your surroundings. I’ve been speeding successfully for years, but nothing like this. It was a workout. It was also a good demonstration of what incredible cars these are. That was 150 miles of constant accelerating, decelerating, and cruising at massive speeds, with the A/C on in 90 degree heat. And it wanted more. All the while it felt planted, solid, completely capable and controlled. There was nothing it did that gave me any concern – except that it gave no indication that it was anywhere near ready to stop pulling, even at 160. I even got 16.3 MPG!
Perhaps in Germany, on the Autobahn, this is just a normal commute, and that’s what these cars were made to do. But, for me, it was a treat I couldn’t wait to share.
