Just got a Nikon D70

Got my 1st SLR yesterday and took my 1st pic today. It's really cloudy today but so far I love the way this camera feels. Now I have to learn how to use it

This shot is very nice. Really as long as you find a nice backdrop, have decent light, take a nice, steady shot and have a beautifu subject (which you do) your will be a fine photographer. To be a great photographer however you must learn the magic of Photoshop... viola!

Very nice & natural, excellent tonal range & detail, love your shot.
Black body cars are tough to shoot, you might want to over exposed 1/3 f-stop to bring out more details in the shadow areas.
Love your wheels

Greyghost - You the MAN! I've gotta learn how to use PhotoShop

bayarea jimmy - Thanks, I don't know the 1st thing about taking pictures with a SLR, I think it's going to take lots of practice.

Dave:

Congratulations on your D70. I got one 2 weeks ago, and love it. I've shot with Nikons since I was 14, and have been waiting for an affordable digital SLR, and this one fits the bill.

One thing I have seen is that in the "auto" mode, the color is a little flat, and white balance is off, especially if there are beige things in the background.

I shoot in the "P" mode, and have set the ISO setting to about 600-800 to get a decent shutter speed. I also have set the "image optimization" (saturation) to "vivid". that gives some pretty good images. I left the white balance to "auto", and it seems to do a bit better job.

I must say that I think that Grey Ghosts photos are very nice, but they are popped just a little too sweet for my tastes. I feel the images look a little too "1940s postcard". But that is just me. learning Photoshop is a good thing, because even if you just learn the automatic color, and levels features, and the cloning tool, you can fix almost any problem the photo has.

enjoy!

Did you get the 75-300 mm Nikon G lens? It is under $200, and does a very good job. Here is a shot with the 300

I guess I'm an outcast here. I have the Canon Digital Rebel SLR and like it alot. Photoshop its a great tool to use.

I like the Depth of Field look...

Lowered with PS6 (Photoshop 6)

Kirby:

The Cannon rocks as well. If Nikon had not come out with the D70, I was this close to getting the Rebel. My brother has one as well, and it is a wonderful camera.

Kirby,
Nice shot, I was just about to order the Rebel when the D70 became available. The black body was the final feature that sold me. As far as I'm concerned, both cameras are great. What type of lens are you using?

Orient Express - Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try your settings next weekend. I got the Camera Kit with the 18 - 70mm DX lens, seems like a good lens for the money. I'm looking for a zoom lens and will checkout the 75-300 Nikon G.

I used a 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens for those shots. I also have a 1.8 50mm that takes great indoor shots. The next Lens I'm planning on getting is the 70-200L Lens.

Nice shots... I have a D100 and it's an awesome camera. Beautiful C4s Cab, my 2001 C4 is black so I went with Seal Grey for the 04 C4s Cab, but I love black Porsches.
