Best way to get a spare key?

I just purchased a 1999 996 C2 Cab that only came with one key.

It's a single button remote key. What's the best source to get a second key? I'm in fear of going to my local dealership...............$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks.

I think your best bet is to get a new remote key from your dealer.
They come with a unique barcode, and needs to be programmed.
Also, some security procedures involved, like SS#, driver's license etc, required.

It will cost you about close to $300, and maybe half an hour labor for programming.

Don't buy one from ebay, UNLESS they come with the original barcode.
Then, you have to make sure your dealer is willing to program the key you bought from ebay. Some dealers will not do it unless you buy from them.

OR...your other option is, if your main purpose is just to get a spare key,
you can order only a non-remote key. So in case of emergency, all you need is a key to open the door and start the car. You can still arm and disarm the car with the key, just without the remote convenience. This will still cost you about over a hundred bucks.

Save yourself and headache and go to a dealer, about $150-200.

Just did a spare key blade with remote at Boardwalk in Dallas.

These guys rock and service was very quick.

$160.00 in parts and $68 to program. That was a great deal.

PeterK - which dealer?

for me, it may be too late as I just picked up two new keys at Park Place that were cut for me. Just showed them my insurance card and that was it. cost about $105 per key. i was told it would be 1/2 hr labor charge to program them both which is in line with Boardwalk of Plano. then you need to figure in the key head which you can get for a discount from Sunset Porsche.

CGT keyhead - $120 (includes all the internals)
911 keyhead - $103 (empty keyhead - no internals)
Standard keyhead - $84 ( includes all internals)

so just add it up and there you go (about $250 for the basic, $295 for the CGT)

I just talked to my local dealer today on this.

$300 for a cut key w/remote head for 1999 996.
$90 shop labor to program it (1 hour).

$390 just seems outrageous to me for a key.

I talked to the good folks at Suncoast today and all they can do is get me an uncut key. They did suggest I look for a Porsche/Audi/VW dealer that has a key cutting machine and I may be able to get one for something less than my local dealer price.

Anyone know of a dealer with a key cutting machine?

jdbaker,

The lowest price for a spare key is at Sunset Porsche. Ask for Eric or Jeff at parts dept. You can't go wrong. I ordered mine with the two buttons for $89. The labor cost from local Porsche dealer ranging from $90 to $135.

Right now, they have a special. Call them!!!

Your dealer can order a "stipulated" key that is cut based on your VIN.

My dealer has the key cutting machine but the parts guys don't like using it.

Either way the key head has to be coded. When I got an extra key it was a flat $50 charge, but this was a long time ago.
