Oil pressure issues

hey guys,

My car idles at 4 - 4.5 bar and under normal driving conditions (3-4k RPM shifts) the oil pressure gauge reads 5.5. Now I'm not a porsche expert by any means, but since the gauge only goes up to 5 bar, I'm guessing this isn't normal??

Also - I was changing my oil today and I realized there's a pretty bad oil leak from a line that is located directly underneath the airbox. I don't know if these two issues are related. Any ideas??

I have a 2000 NA C2 996 w/ 40k miles on it and no aftermarket mods. No check engine light and engine oil level is normal.

Thanks for all your help.

So after speaking to some more people, I realized that slightly high oil pressure is ok. I'm running 15w50 (as recommended by my manual) and this attributes to the slightly higher oil pressure readings on my gauges.

I'm idling around 4-5 bar and hitting about 5.5 bar under normal driving conditions.

just fyi for you guys.

since this is slightly thicker oil... its normal, ow40 will run at lower pressure

IF the idle oil pressure you state is on a fully warmed engine, you have a problem. Probably oil sending unit. If your fully warmed engine did, in fact have an oil pressure of 4 - 5 bar at idle. you would blow an oil line or other componant at higher rpms. If the engine is cold, then your idle pressure is correct. Once wamrd up, you car shuld have a pressure of around 2 bar as indicated on the gauge.

If my oil pressure is considerably out of range, shouldn't I expect my oil pressure light to come on?

I did see an oil line leaking from underneath my car. I'll take it in to a mechanic for a look later.

Is this something that is DIY?

I'm pretty sure the OP light only comes on in the case of very low pressure, not overly high pressure.

I just had it checked out at a mechanic. It appears that my oil pressure sensor is reading about 1 bar above average so I probably need to get that replaced. That on top running 15w50 oil explains why it's above 5.5 bars. I was told high oil pressure is not a big deal as long as the seals around the engine aren't leaking.

That leaking coming from underneath the car is from some cam seal that apparently isn't related to my high oil pressure and it's like $17 bux each to replace.

Nothing crucial. Thanks for all your help.

btw - 1 bar sounds pretty low to idle at...
