Just drove a 996
Just drove a 996
I've always been something of a car nut (enthusiast sounds nicer
) Anyway, I've always been enthralled by the Porsche cars. I've driven (not owned) a 356C, 911, 914, 924. A few years ago a friend bought a new cabrio and gave me the keys at a party, what a blast! That one was the last of the air cooled engine cars. The other day my neighbor who owns a used car lot drove in with a black 996 and we got to talking and all and before too long he gave the keys so I could "take it for a drive"
Well, I was pretty impressed with the pick up and "feel" of it and of course, I always love driving Porsches. I've tought about buying one from time to time, but they are too expensive for my tastes. Oh, I know I can get a used one for a very affordable price, but the maintenance is just too much. Too expensive and too much of it. Still, I think about owning a Porsche one day, perhaps after I retire and don't need a dependable daily driver
There is one thing that bothers me about the Porsche though.. I was directed to a thread in these forums where folks were "discussing" the merits of Porsches vs the WRX and EVOs. I must say that I've never read such pomposity and arrogance as some of the Porsche owners displayed. Not only that, but they seem to be very ignorant, intolerant and generally just full of poop. The main thread seemed to be that if you own a Porsche it shows "you've arrived", "you've class and means", you're somehow in a "higher level" than some pinply faced, baseball cap wearing punk, etc. Man, I might still get a Porshche one day, but I hope that I never get that kind of attitude
I'm over 50 and have nothing to prove to anybody. I've owned and modified all kinds of cars. Detroit muscle, Italian and British roadsters, Saabs, German cars, Miatas, Nissans, Hondas, Integras, and yes, a WRX which I traded for an EVO 8. The EVO kiicks butt in a big way and for so called "car enthusiast" (as these Porsche owners seem to think themselves) to try and put down these great cars is just pathetic. I can't believe how threatened and insecure they feel even after having spent all the cash they did that they need to stoop down and ridicule and stereotype the competition as "ricers", "punks", "gangters", etc.
For those guys I can say that you'd best sell that Porsche and use the proceeds for some extended psychotherapy or counseling to get over those huge inferiority complexes

I ditto Pieball's reaction.
What's the purpose of your post? That you love Porsches, but think Porsche owners are ignorant or arrogant? Reacting to the former, I'm happy that you've enjoyed the Porsche driving experience. I think all of us on this board share that in common.
As to the latter comment, I think that that horse has been beaten so hard, it looks like a WRX. No further comment.

hey 72, lighten up, you sound very angry and I don't think it's
about porsche owners, I think it's about you not being able to own a porsche (for what ever reason). Porsche owners arrogant?
Show offs maybe but not arrogant, Ignorant? I don't think so,read some of the posts on this forum, you'll find some very
knowledgeable people.
I hope some day you'll own one of these super cars, but until then remember THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE! think about it.

I agree with 911flyn, most porsche owners are actually super people.....maybe just the fact that they drive a porsche may cause others to stigmatize them, thinking they are arrogant. I will admit I've run across other Pcar owners who ARE arrogant and think they are hot $hit but they suddenly become friendly once they realize I own a Pcar - I usually see how much of an *** they can be before I leak the info out about what I drive. After talking to them, I've come to realize that the arrogant ****** are the ones that don't really even know what they have, how to drive it, much less any of the history. These people are the ones that buy it simply for the badge and showing everybody that they've "made it" - at least in their eyes
Very sad but some people do value themselves and others upon their material assets. Fortunately you can spot these people pretty easily and avoid them. I don't think you will find any of the like here in this forum. "It's about the people"
take care

Please go back to underneath that rock from where you crawled out.
I have personally met almost every So.Cal 6speeder and Rennlister on these boards. I can tell you I have not met one pompous, snooty whatever you want to add here... I do run into those types you speak of in your message they cruise around my area of town every day. Everyone here will give you a waive or a flash, all of us have a passion for these cars. You have no idea what your talking about and you are simply generalizing.
Go away if you don't like it.

Sonnett,
We could all generalize about the average WRX & EVO owner also and it likely wouldn't come close to describing you. Think about that the next time you do the same for P-car drivers.
As a new 996 owner in '98, I too was mistaken about the average Porsche driver (though not as much as you are). What changed my tune? My first PCA meeting. It was filled with people like yourself who had a great appreciation for the history, quality and engineering of Porsches. Most, like you, had always dreamed of owning one and somehow pulled the money together to make it happen. They were just as proud whether they had a high mileage beater or the latest-greatest. What an eye opener!
Go to one of their events in your area and you'll likely feel ashamed of your earlier comments. The pompous windbags are far outnumbered by people just like you and I.

Geez, 72, take a chill pill!
I think you'll find almost all P-car aficionados to be friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgable, and they even no how to spell.
Even folks on this and other Porsche forums who have an
obvious preference for German cars, and who would not buy
an Evo, still show courtesy and respect when the subject of
my daily driver, an Evo VIII, comes up. You'll find that performance, not pretention, is the common denominator amongst P-car fans.
I hope you get over this thing.
