I have a 2003 911, with under 19K miles, and less than two weeks left under warranty. At speed, between 70 and 90 let's say, the car has a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel, seat and the car generally. This is over roads that may not be smooth, but never gave me a bit of problem in my 00 boxster.
Should I go to the dealer for a check over, or to a good tire store for a front end alignment/balance? Hate to bother the dealer for non warranty stuff, especially with the one week wait time to get in!

Most likely, your tires are out of balance. What is their condition? Alignment issues result more often in a tendency to pull in either direction.

 

I had the same problem in my TT. I had the tires balanced when I purchased them, but I still had wheel shake. I took it to the Porsche dealership twice and finally took it back to the place I bought the tires and they finally got right. Have them rechecked and watch when they do it and insist on having them do all four. Sometimes they only want to do the fronts.

 

Tires are 85+%. I think i will save the dealer some sweat and go to a tire store first. Thanks for the input!

 

Most likely balance...I had the same issue. Although, when I had my NSX, same issue but when I took it to discount there was a huge 8 inch hemmoroid on the damn tire that caused it to shake. But anyway, most likely balance issues.

 

Get the wheels and tyres balanced first, least expensive route for troubleshooting this issue and usually this fixes it.

that said, I have PS2s on oem wheels that are powdercoated and they get a bit more "vibe" than others...but ususually when you have a higher speed only one, its the balance...but Im just saying what everyone else has...

 

Check your rims to see if one of your wheel weight strips may have come off. Or, see if someone slapped an extra one on you wheels either as a payback or a joke.

 

I would find a tire shop that has the Hunter 9700 Road Force balancing machine. You can find a shop that has one by going to the following link:

100 percent...these machines are really great and I have NEVER had a bad balance from one...that said, they CAN be more expensive but as said many a time...you gotta pay to play!

 

For those following along at home- you were right! The front right wheel was 35g out of balance. Runs like a dream now!

Looks like I got here late, but glad to hear it's fixed.

I would say, wheel balance, alignment, wheel bearing in that order.

 

I would send a check, but i had the dealer do the balance. Cost more than the car. I left my firstborn to work it off in the shop. OH well.
