Why is the 997TT Tip so slow?
Haa Haa, I don't think so! I know Allan too, and let me just say, we are a WORLD apart. Allan will **** all over P-cars and bash them as if they are SH**, but me? Well, I love them and own two right now, a 04 Cayenne S and 06 C4s, so I think that puts me in a different class.
To the rest that have responded, thank you guys for your input. I think I was just trying to be too kind on a new turbo. I am going to seek out a used one and drive it like I stole it. I am sure things will be different.
Thanks again!

Thanks!! Learned something everyday. Next test drive, I am going to just smash it down.
I would be curious what car you currently drive or are comparing it to?

What's funny is, I test drove a 2007 Gallardo Spyder before buying my 997TT and was tremendously underwhelmed. And they wanted $220K for it!!! Also, just the other day, I came up alongside a yellow Gallardo coupe on the toll road. He hit his accelerator and got about a 2 second jump on me. I was in 5th gear and put the pedal down, got the overboost and caught him in about 3 seconds. I passed him pretty easily. I don't think either of us left 5th gear and I can't vouch for how skilled he was or how hard he was pushing it. But he gave me a nice thumbs up once he caught up to me. Beyond an LP640 I wouldn't take any Lambo over the 997TT.
Everyone needs to realize the difference in feel between a naturally aspirated car with over 400 bhp and a turbo-charged one. The feel is very different. Naturally aspirated cars feel like they have more throttle response - and they usually do. Once you learn to drive the twin-turbo, however, very few naturally aspirated cars can stay with you. I went from a 420 bhp heavily modified SLK55 AMG Mercedes (Brabus B55S) and until just recently I actually thought it might be faster than the 997TT. But as I pick up the proper way to drive the 997TT, I am starting to realize its potential. The 997TT has very little patience for those who don't know what they are doing.
LamboPete is just trying to bait us anyway. Why would you still be in the market for a car that so severely let you down? I left Lambo of OC with no desire at all to buy a Gallardo.

As a reference, the three cars that I drive are: 2006 997 C4S (DD), 2005 Lambo Gallardo, and 2006 BMW M5. BTW, I am close in putting a deposit down on an 09 allocation. Just trying to understand this car better before I write that check.
Here is the thing.
1. I have no doubt that the TT is one of the fastest production cars in the world, hands down.
2. I know, it's a turbo car, so I have to rev it up. I know that, I have had many turbo cars in the past.
3. This car is not for 0 - 60 sprint, but OK, IT IS to me, cause on paper it can be!
However, think about this one. Porsche's own dyno sheet states that this engine develops a WOPPING 505 ft-bls of torque at as low as around 2K RPM through and past 4K RPM!!! And, even without the overboost, that number is stated at 460 ft-bls of torque. That is a HUGE amount of torque!!!
Yes, I kept it under 4K RPM to give respect to a new engine, but I did go WOT on it. My expectation was to be able to achieve and feel this 460 ft-bls of torque at 2K through 4K.....and it was not there. This is where the engine did not meet my expectation.
In my research, I noticed a few owners stating that under 4K, it's civilized and the like. Ok, I agreed with that. But, with this kind of power down low (505/460 fl-bls), it should NOT be civilized if I am going WOT on it. What else could a driver do to get power in a TIP short of pre-loading the turbos (stepping on the gas and brake at the same time before launching it)?
That is what I am trying to get at guys. How can one extract the stated power at 2K through 4K RPM in this engine?
Sorry, I don't mean any disrespect here to anyone and Porsche TT owner. I am NOT trying to bait anyone either.
Yes, I have no doubt the TT, when on full boost, is faster then the Gallardo. Hey, that is why I am trying to buy one as my new daily driver.
Maybe you know the answer to my question than. Please see my prior post.
Thanks!
I guess I am still confused a bit about your interest in the 997TT. If you already have a C4S and a Gallardo the next logical step would be on to a Ferrari. Have you driven an F430 - particularly the new Scuderia version should meet your expectations. Or perhaps a low mile CGT. You have had some very nice cars. Your expectations are understandably very high. Perhaps you are just not shopping in the right category for you.
I thought the 997TT Tip had a launch control feature that allowed you to preload the turbos for a better jump off the line - thus accounting for its 0-60 in 3.4 secs as opposed to the manual's 3.7 secs. Did your dealer mention this feature? Did you try it out?
Are you dead set on a tip? Why?

Ferrari, Lambos, and CGT....I consider them as weekend cars, so they are not in the mix this time.
I didn't know the Tip had launch control feature. That would be nice. My sales person didn't mention anything about this feature. Lastly, I am not set on a Tip. I plan to go back to the dealer soon to test drive a manual, and I will drive it like I stole it this time.
Thanks!

My interest in the 997TT is that I am looking for a new daily driver car, and plan to get rid of my C4s and replace it with the TT. I need a car with kids seats in the back since I take both of my young kids to school in the morning.

I'm guessing the dealer will, most likely, not let you drive it like that. You tell us? We'll be waiting to hear.
The tips are great, but I guess you will tell us after your 45 second drive. (they will be shutting you down if you don't respect the car's limits, no matter what you are hoping for)
Good luck and let us know.
Seems a little "unfair" to mistreat a car that you don't really intend to buy/own, only so you can obuse it (drive it like I stole it, your words!).

Boy, I drive it nicely, and get called an old lady. Than, I said I would push it, and drive it like I stole it...and get call mistreating a car I don't intend to own. What gives?
Seriously, with multiple car purchase history, and two more potential purchases in the pipeline with the dealership, I would be surprised if I get shut down in 45 seconds. I respect every car I do drive on the lot, but when I do ask nicely, sky is the limit buddy!
If you test drove a car with a dealer, most would expect you to rip in it. If not, the salesman is a jerk-off. Like he cares, he wants you to be impressed.
You aren't going to wreck a car driving it aggressively.
