The Tip is fast!!!!!!!!!
I've been monitoring and posting to a recent thread about the Tip being slow.
Well, I'm here to tell you, in spite of all the 6 speed lovers here, and I know there're are many, the tip is not slow.
I'm fortunate to have both, although my highly modified++ 996TT 6 speed yellow TT is being picked up tomorrow, as it has been sold.
But, having had this 996TT and many other fast cars, including the Ford GT, I'm here to tell you, the Tip 997, out of the hole, if you drive it right, is totally awesome!
Would it win on a short path race with the GT, well, probably not, or may be very close. The GT anytime after the 60 mph would be faster, but, for those of you that like to run fast from stop light to stop light, the Tip 997 is extremely fast. It's a kick in the butt fun to drive, and I can't speak highly enough about it.
The Porsche tranny designers in the 997 tip version should be complimented!
Needless to say, I have no knowledge about Ruf and other +hp modified Turbos, as I only have this one to compare it to.
Just my opinion after having owned both. Comments welcome.

Thanks Bill, I should be getting my 997TT in a few days and can appreciate both varainces in transmissions.
I too had a modified 996TT manual albeit not as heavily as yours and loved it but found the interior to be a bit unrefined. I know the 997 has made advancements in this category. I have the choice of a tip on the ground or a manual in a few short weeks. Both cars are equally appointed but the tip is Guards Red and the manual is Black.
What is your personal best way to launch the tip?

Do most people just keep it in auto mode? How responsive are the shift buttons, i.e. is there a lag between the time you hit the button and the shift happens? I have an M3 with SMG now and have been hesitant on going with Tip, preferring instead to wait for PDK/DSG. This is wait is getting quite frustrating.

.
From what I've read, I don't think so. I think the wait may be longer than any of us hope.
I hope not, but I think they have some issues.

For city stop and go, the tip 997TT is insane in first gear when gear selector is flipped to manual. Problem is that you'll have to remember to shift to second gear as it will not do it for you automatically at red line.
I find myself often going in manual mode on first gear, and then simply flipping the gear selector to auto when it's time to shift to second, and let the system take over.
For the best launch, one can leave the gear box in auto mode, press the brakes and gas bringing the engine to 3k rpm and let go.
I seldom use the above approach as it causes too much noise and attention. Simply downshifting to first gear and flipping the gear selector to manual is fast enough for me.

Agree with what all stated and further opine that "power braking" or "torque braking" out of the hole isn't even necessary for most stoplight "drags". I think the real action with the tip isn't 0-60 or 0-100, but in having ANY car keep up with you, on the street, over the backroads. I always push the sport button as soon as I get into the car. Once you are on boost (to me that means keeping the car in the meaty part of the powerband and in auto mode where the tip will not shift and will hold a gear for several seconds in sport mode) and have a little open room to move the tip really shines. Even against a vaunted Ford GT or modded Z06, one blown or missed shift (or even against a slow/lazy shifter) and they are history !

Although, if you are not in sport mode and PSM is on (defaults at startup), and you're just driving around in no big hurry, the Tip will upshift at or near redline without your input. I'm sure most of us drive it in sport mode most of the time, and then you will have to upshift it yourself or you will hit the rev limiter.

So Bill, you're saying if in non-sport manual mode, the tip will upshift automatically?
Never tried it as I always drive in sports mode.
