Wow....that was a long ride.
And to bring it all back in......I loved the 997 Turbo (and still do). It was one of the best cars for the money when it came out. It still is, although I personally prefer the GT3.
However, with progress, comes...well, progress. Porsche had its day in the sun with what was intended to be a HOLD OVER car until the replacement to the 997. Porsche fans should be flattered that Nissan so specifically targeted the 997TT when doing testing and design. And yes, it's a faster, better-handling car. But...the Porsche is still a Porsche.
The GT-R is in everyway (performance and technology wise) better than a 997TT, and better in many ways than the GT3. But ask me which I'd rather have to keep.....and I'd say the GT3.
However.....I say that having owned a GT3, and not having driven a GT-R yet. Will I change my mind? Maybe. But just because the GT-R is faster doesn't mean Porsches suck. They will come back with a 998TT that will blow the freaking doors off of the GT-R.
Wait a minute....I forgot about the Spec-V. (*$&%$#%

Switchcars. You Have a S2000. When you bought that did you consider the EVO or STI? When I bought my Honda my choice was made for the same reason I like the Porsche better than the GT-R. Granted new for new it might be a little tougher choice. But you can buy a nice used 996tt for the same price or less than the GT-R and five years from now I'm sure the Porsche will be worth considerably more.

But....I'm a guy who is ADD when it comes to cars, and (partly because of my business) needs to own the latest and greatest cars and evaluate them. And BOY am I excited about the GT-R. BUT not as excited as I was about the GT3 RS. And only slightly more than I was about the 997 Turbo.
I am (as heavychevy would say) a GT-R "fanboy". But as much as I love the merits of the car, I will never be able to get over the fact that it is slightly less ricerish than an STi, and slightly more ricerish than a "pimped" Gallardo.
Yes, I will be absolutely stunned by the performance of the GT-R, and there is no doubt it will kick the sorry rear end of EVERYTHING out there currently in production that is within double its price range. I will be enthralled with the car and smile like a 16yr old seeing a stripper for the first time every time I drive it. But what will I still own in 5 years?
A Porsche and a F******.
Haha, there he is. And don't kid yourself, me and switchcars here had arguments about the STI vs EVO vs S2000 for weeks.
I think we both agreed, the EVO's interior is made out of plastic that even Chinese toy companies throwing lead in their Tickle Me Elmo's wouldn't even touch. And both a too boy racer for someone looking for a bit of class.
S2000 fits the bill nicely and for the same reasons as you guys mentioned, it's harder for me to ignore as my next car than I imagine quitting smoking would be...
But back on topic of the GT-R, I would agree with the assessment you guys made: it's very hard to ignore a name. While the looks of the GT-R have definitely grown on me since the concept pictures and iterations in magazine...it's still, well slightly odd, which has been upgraded from fugly or pug fugly.
And despite all the performance, even if the thing (read as upcoming V-Spec) would whip a 430 Scuderia up and down Fiorano, I would still give a significant body part for the F-car. Similarly, the GT3 is easily one of my most desired machines as I have said before. But if money does come into it, I think I'd take a GT-R every time. And that ultimately is the point. Dollar for dollar its hard to beat. If money is no issue, everyone would just ADD a GT-R to their collection, not decide between it and another comparable vehicle.
That being said, as much as names are superficial to most people, if you do know the history of a company or appreciate the heritage, it is worth something to you, and ultimately you are the one buying the car, so who gives a flip what anyone else thinks.
Nissan has plenty of heritage, just not the same type as Porsche or Ferrari or what have you...I for one don't discriminate (well, not that much anyways, if Hyundai makes a CGT killer, they can keep it).

I'm glad you admitted it before I had to correct you. The GT-R is by now means better in every way than a TT. It hasnt run a faster ET or trap speed and several journalist have noted the TT as faster in a straight line. You'll have to see the other thread to see that these mag tests are garbage.
As for anything within twice the price range.
A Z06 will mop the floor with the GT-R for less than 70k
Viper SRT-10 83k
Viper ACR 98k
ZR-1 less than 100k (I think)
So I'd reconsider that considering there are already two cars less than 100k that will embarass a GT-R. And they are home grown. And when their big brothers come out, the curtains only get thicker.
Swithcars, funny you said ADD when it comes to cars. I've said that myself many times over the years. Even the Pro GT-R articles comment that you don't feel connected to the car. I miss that from my Honda. In fact I'm half looking for a GT3 to try get that back. But first I'll try an exhaust to get rid of the turbo lag, I do have a Granddaughter so the back seat is nice.
I'm excited to drive a GT-R ,but if as the magazines say that it feels less connected than the 977tt, I just don't think it will be for me. They are all good though.

If the GT-R fanboys concede the issue that the GT-R may not wipe the floor with the 997TT (until more unbiased?? testing comes out). Would you concede that the Z06 wouldn't mop the floor with the GT-R??
Performance numbers wise, the GT-R is neck and neck 0-60, if not faster and more consistently so, and as for corners, by no means is the Z06 a slouch, but I guarantee you that with an average driver the GT-R would lap faster every time due to apparent ease of use. But you may say, well professionally driven and I have this for you:
N-ring times show more varied track usability >>>
http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?vie...ID=0&tID=10073
Here, GT-R is shown as I will say between 7:36-38, despite claims of a 7:35.
The 997GT2 and CGT are shown around 7:32. While the 997TT is at 7:40.
The fastest z06 listed comes in at 7:43. So I am wondering exactly the basis for your mop the floor claim? Especially considering you've never even driven a GT-R?
Also the Viper is down there at like 8:13 (yes I see its auto, but even without, ill give it 8:00, still slow as ***** compared to GT-R), and anyone that has ever driven one knows, wow straight-line = great, turn = little trouble on the horizon (No im not talking about a RACE GTS-R or ACR or any of that). So again, not sure where the claim comes in your list...
Finally as for the ZR-1 and ACR comment, wait for the V-Spec to make the comparison...and yes I get the price range you were getting at.
So without getting all huffy and puffy about it, would you care to share you opinion about this. And simply stating, "I believe" isn't what I'm looking for.
(I'm seriously looking to have a discussion here, if you can't do it civilly, don't bother replying)
Also I'd like to point out the discrepancy between you claiming that the journalists are biased and then using their purported claims of the 997 "feeling faster". Either leave them in or out, don't pick and choose, there is no credibility or there is.

I can tell your going to have a lot of fun here. And I mean that in a good way. Now go get rid of the accord and get an S2000.
