No joke... this is something that has bothered me since I was a kid with every car brand that uses numbers.

What happens after porsche produces the 999?

What happens after BMW finally gets to the 395i?

I wish I was joking

BMW will be called series "F" after all "E" are done. As for Porsche, they keept that info locked up until they make any kind of announcements.

So I spoke to a somewhat reliable source today (*ahem affiliated w/ the company), and he mentioned that the Turbo engine is unlikely to change. The Carrera line, on the other hand, is a different story....

Porsche has made changes mid year more than once...MOST optical stereo upgrade, availability of options like the X73 suspension, etc. I wouldn't be suprised if changes didn't follow a specific model year.

Porsche has been relatively conservative in comparision with BMW . The "Porsche 911" has the "internal" designations wheras BMW pastes it right the rear of its vehicles along with a new engine before owners of launch cars even change the oil . I have posted in BMW forums referring to this frequent change as "catering to attention deficit" customers and a car ought to be released with a sufficient engine and design to last awhile . The "M" division seems to follow a better route but even with "M " it capitalizes on it's "limited production" to inflate sales (IMO) . The E46 M3 sold at MSRP in many parts and even "over sticker" in others and now one can see that they are in fact quite plentiful .

So -will Porsche follow this ? I hope not but I can't know. The 996 was talked about when the 993 came out but had a longer timeline of production (1999-2004) and with the 997 Porsche went back to a modern version of a traditional style .
It has lasted awhile (launched 2004 - 2008 before unconfirmed official refresh) . I commend Porsche for this . If Porsche evolves and offers frequent revisions it may mean that both the technological growth as well as the consumer demand for "more, better, faster !!!!!" has changed their history.

I also speculate that if the day comes when Porsche terminates production of this series the car number designation won't even matter . In my opinion it would be like retiring a legend .

it is all good, no problem here. I was disappointed because I expect dealerships to have better knowledge of their products(or Porsche US should provide better information to their dealers). I hold a slot for an 09 TT because I do not need a car till late Oct. First I was told 09 will be 998, which puzzle me, a wk later I was told there is no change for the TT. Now I am confused if the 09 TT will get a face lift and 20HP upgrade. Maybe get inline for an R8?

The big thing I think a lot of people are waiting for is the PDK. That and 20 horses would be big selling point.

If only they could find a way to stop blowing those things up....

395i....what do you mean??? BMW 1st number 3..35 5 35 ..7 35 is the model 3 series, 5 series, 7 series and the last two numbers correspomnd to the engine size....3.5 liter....although BMW uses the 35 designation on the twin turbo 6....in other words there wont ever be a 95 unless they make a 9.5 l engine....

And the internal model designations are not to be confused with the model.....

the 3 series is deginated E90 (sedan) E92 (coupe)
