Strike 3 on the Oil Leak Issue
I was surprised how many GT3 guys had RMS problems, although it's not that prevalent as it seems because of the ratio of GT3 owners and web-posting is quite high compared to the rest of the model line-up. Seems the dealers aren't holding break-in periods and limiter hits against these fixes, but one mechanic says he sees the correlation. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

I had faced the RMS issue with my 996 years back. It was repaired under warranty and I kept the car another few months . Although RMS is less commonly observed with the 997 it does exist. In fact even with the 996 cars the problem frequency improved in the newer cars as if Porsche has really attempted to correct the issue only to fail at eliminating it.
What surprises me about the 997tt is that the problem repair solution is an immediate engine replacement . With other models the seal is usually fixed and engine replacement has more often beeen the final effort rather than an early correction .
The most recent post has an owner with less than 200 miles . That sure does sound rather quick IMO.

In my first 2,000 miles I have only dropped 1 bar so far. I did not quite stick to the book. I went over the 4,200 a few times but not over 5,500. I officially hit WOT at about 1,700 and haven't looked back.
I have driven the beejeezus out of my 2008 from day one - starting with a 1,200 mile trek from Bellingham WA to Socal in 2 days last January. Lots of driving over 100mph and at least an hour aggregate over 140mph. I have 2,200 miles on it now and the oil level has just this week dropped 1 segment. I won't add any until it drops at least one more segment - or i may change the oil "just because".

I agree with “YRRALIS1’s” statement about Porsche trying to correct the RMS problem, but failing to eliminate it. Well put. I did the RMS in my 996, although it wasn’t an issue, but was replacing the clutch, and my service tech strongly suggested we do both and save a couple dollars down the road in labor fees. When selling the car, it was a question the ‘in-the-know’ buyers where glad to hear was done. Yet another owner has had is RMS replaced 3 times!
I’m the guy (or one of the guys) he’s referring to regarding replacing engines when there’s a leak at 180 miles. But it’s not the same leak at all. My block is made too porous for the oil pressure on the Turbo, and the oil literally ‘seeps’ or ‘weeps’ through the engine block. Kind of like a saturated wet sponge will “weep” water from one side when you press on the opposite side. Different scenario than the RMS problem.
Hope that helps.
