Strike 3 on the Oil Leak Issue
Strike 3 on the Oil Leak Issue
On most auto boards a post will surface with problem. I haven't read too many on this 997tt until now where the first post titled "Oil Leak Saga" seemed like an isolated case. As of today I see THREE posts on the same issue and in all the cases the solution outcome has been "engine replacement" .
I can't help but wonder if this problem frequency is random or if this may be an Achilles heel of the this model .
4K miles on my car and not a drop . Yet. I looked .
Have you?

My pops turbo has this problem.... it tends to leak alittle bit of oil on the garage floor. I spent two hours with a flash light trying ot figure out where it is coming from but no dice.
That's nuts. I've burned over 2 in 7k.
No leaks at least.

18,000 miles on my 07. No leaks but I've burned through at least 5-7 quarts of oil. Oil consumption was particularly heavy during the break-in period. Just had to put on a new set of tires due to heavy wear on the rear set.
Could you guys post up your break-in procedures? Did one of you go out and beat on the car, do a lot of engine decels, etc.?
I'd be interested to know if one of you took it easy on it, one didn't etc and see if that might have played a role in oil consumption.
I drove mine according to the factory break-in procedures. Varying rpms up to 4500 rpms for 2000 miles. Never lugging the engine, etc. Worked great for me. Plenty of power, virtually nil oil consumption.
I took it easy for the break in period. Varied RPMs, no excessive speed. I think this was for the first 1000 or so miles (whatever the book says). Engine braking could be a difference though. I tend to engine brake. A habit I'm trying to break.
Interesting to see what other drivers report with respect to oil useage.

Are you kidding me? You need to come ride with me, John. Believe me, I've done my share of aggressive driving.
I'm honestly not sure why my Turbo hasn't consumed that much oil. I carry a bottle of oil in my front trunk and it's the very first one that I got and it's still not empty.

I burned 1/2 quart in the first 3K miles . Nothing crazy. My car has sat in the garage for a week , no oil . I still have remnants though of the RMS drippings from my 02 996 though serving as a reminder that the possibility exists.
yaralis,
Based on purely "forum statistics," i.e. nothing scientific, the Turbo *seems* to be by far the least oil leak prone of the 3 groups: 997, 997GT3/GT3RS, and 997 Turbo.
Check out rennlist GT3 forum, you will see a number of RMS reports. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...archid=2676232
It *seems* to be way more than one would expect from the reputation of the GT1 block and the few number of GT3 cars on the road. Now it could be that a proportionally higher number of GT3 owners are on the forum; nevertheless, it's disturbing.
I remember when I was looking to buy my 997, the impression was that only the 997 engine block is RMS prone. That is not true at all.
