How often you turn PSM off?
How often you turn PSM off?
I just got my 997 in January (had a 996TT) and did some searches about PSM but didnt get as much info as I wanted and figured I could get some real feedback here.
How often do you drive with it off? Is it as intrusive on as lets say MBZ's ESP or is it completely defeatable like the DSC on the Bimmers (M5 and M6)?
I read in the manual how it is limitations are greatly reduced under Sport Mode but how safe or dangerous is it in daily driving and is there a noticeable gain in acceleration with it off.
In my M6 in S6 mode (with DSC off), the car is quite loose and sometimes downright scary in turns from a dig. I just want to know what the limits are on the PSM from your vast experiences.

I always drive with Sport mode on and PSM on. I have never felt that PSM is too intrusive in Sport mode. Perhaps I would feel differently if I was racing the car, but on the street, I think that Sport mode along with PSM is the perfect setting.
Thanks Steve- I appreciate you taking the time.
I drove my M3 and M5 always with DSC off but thats because on shifts and heavy acceleration DSC was always kicking off. I would only use it when its raining but then I wasnt flying around.
In the porsche I always drive with it on, I havent really had it kick on me during everyday city driving or spirited driving. Same when I use sport mode.
Only time I trun it off is when I started auto-xing but then its pretty safe, anything happens and you are nowhere near anything that you can hit and I still havent had the car spin on me. Garaunteed I would have spun my M3 or M5 by now or at least got it very sideways.

I always leave it on, even on the track. However, I did a track event that coned off a short circuit and encouraged you to "push it" with PSM off. I had a blast sliding around corners a bit-- until I clipped a corner and spun. Here's the video:

All fun and games in a 2nd gear short loop, but I would not want that to happen at serious track (or even highway) speeds.
I agree with previous posters that PSM in Sport Mode allows plenty of freedom for most drivers. I know some will disagree.

Leave it on, the psm is much less intrusive than the 996 version, if it's coming on, you're probably doing something wrong(track).

Hi,
This advice is more to Tiptronic/ PSM
if You use Your car on street, You should always keep it on, it really doesn't disturb at all.
But when You are having a track day, You should start with PSM on and after You feel confident turn it off.
PSM on the car changes higher gear automatically + if You have high oversteer situation. When You turn PSM off You can control the gears better, it keeps the rev's against the limiter without changing to higher gear.
PSM on it was not nice to come into corner braking with proper gear and when accelerating after apex to find out You have one gear too high
On dry surface PSM off the car is quite easily controlled in oversteer situations. Just remember never lift of gas in middle of the corner

Porsches PSM is one of the least intrusive on ANY car today...and in sport mode, the tolerances for slip angles only become greater...so even in very spirited driving, having the sport mode threshold will be more than enough!
