Help Needed > Engine Light Came On

Drove car yesterday, used almost full tank of gas, no issues. Took it out for a quick errand this afternoon. I was forced to accelerate briskly do to traffic in auto mode, not manual mode before car was fully up to operating temp.

Stopped with my son to check out some new E92 ///M3's and turned off the car. When we restarted the check engine symbol lit up and on the on board computer it stated "check enginge, take to workshop" . Pulled over and checked fuel filler cap (fine), engine sounds fine, oil presure, temps, boost all ok. But pesky light stays on .

Any hints? Will get into the dealer tomorrow, but I was wondering if any of you guys may be able to give me some piece of mind as to why it has thrown this code. Manual says it is ok to drive in not flashing, but your mind gets to wondering as you do not want to do any damage.

You can get a cheap scanner at sears, around 70$, it actually works really well, gives the codes and all. Sounds like an emissions issue, is the exhaust stock?

Yellow or flashing red light? red is not good, yellow probably just something that needs to be reset.

May surprise you after the engine has been off for awhile. It may go off on it's own. I have had the light go on once with wheels spinning badly on sand. Once it went into the limp mode, the second time it didn't. Having the car off for awhile corrected itself. Let us know what the dealer says.

Update > Took the car to dealer today and here is the scoop: The car for some reason threw a code that indicates the car was filled with gas when the car was running. I have never put gas in any car, let known my 997TT, with out turning the car off. They then claimed you cannot leave the key in assessory position either as it will also cause the problem.

The part that was most infuriating was they then informed me that I owed them 62 bucks to reset the light as the check engine light was caused due to user error!

I find it incredulous that the very first time I take a 165K car in for service they will not cover something as simple as resetting a check engine light under warranty. Please tell me Porsche does not treat thier top end customers this way. I have never experienced this with either BMW or Mercedes before.

In the end the service manager overheard the converstation (particularly the part that I would be taking my business else where) and then came out and made things right and said they would eat the cost. Not that the money was the real issue here, it was more the principle of the matter.

I can't believe that the light didn't reset itself after the car was turned off for awhile. A lot times I leave the key on so the passenger can still listen to the radio and so far have had no problem. A lot of nutty things go on with Porsche's electrical-safeguard system. The tire sensor too, can be a pain, but I have learned to just let itself adjust, the light will finally go off. Sometimes two to three days go by with the damm light covering up that part of the dash.

I orginally thought that the light would go off after letting it sit for awhile but no luck. That night after he let the car sit for 8 hours we started it up and the light was still on. I decided that night to take the car over and fill it up with gas since it only had a quarter tank in it and go and put some easy miles on her to see if the light would go off but after 50 miles no dice. I gotta admit it was so hard to have to take the turbo out and put miles on her! Because the light came on when the car only had a quarter tank of gas it makes me wonder about the dealerships reasoning for why it came on. First, they said we must have filled up the car while it was running which it def was not the case as the car was filled up over a week prior and didn't have the light come on until over 3/4 tank was burned up. Secondly if the cause was leaving the key in the accessory position during filling then you would think that the light would come on not soon after driving away from the gas station right? Well the light came on after we had burned off 3/4 a tank of gas over the space of a week and half! In fact the light came on after my Dad and brother had stopped at the local BMW dealersip to check out the new e92 M3's. It was after they had been looking at the m3's for half and hour and got back in the car and started it up that the light came on. The facts just don't add up to me but either way the light is now off and the dealership covered it so its water under the bridge.

Thanks for the followup on this, sounds like just a porsche electrical fluke. Something that should have easily been covered under warranty.

Completely different cars.
But my Range Rover illuminates the CEL if I make a abrupt maneuver.
It's something about a sensor that gets tripped when the fuel sloshes in the tank.

That being said, I would constantly get the CEL to come on.
Like your dealer they wanted $50 to reset the light.

After that 1st trip to the dealer I bought a Actron scanner that can reset the CEL.
Cost me $70 with shipping.

That way I can tell what's causing the CEL and I can reset it if it's nothing serious.
