PCCB's durability
PCCB's durability
hi guys i just want to have a feed back on how long your ceramic disc on your 997tt's have lasted especially if you track them . mine has around 15 000 miles on them mainly highway and 5 weekends DE so far and altough they feel fine i start to notice round spots about the size of a nickel apparent on the surface of the rear discs that folks on my pca region say they are wear indicators meaning it's time to replace them already!!!! i thought those second generations PCCB's were supposed to last way longer (i heard 30 000 miles of track use!!) have you guys had any better / worse experience with them?? is it considered defects covered by warranty or normal wear and tear
i heard replacing them cost around 8000 $ for the rear set ouch

Sounds a little early, but I have not seen you drive
Definately worth a trip to the dealer for an inspection though. The way the computer controls traction and all that fun stuff can lead to serious wear when tracked unless you turn all the nannies off.
Knowing Porsche I'd say you better get the checkbook out. Fingers crossed thats not the case though.

Khoi,
*If* no one answers you here, try posting on rennlist's GT2/GT3 forum, or their racing/mods forum. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...play.php?f=141
They are tough on Turbo's (out of torque fear and jealousy
) but there are many knowledgeable members there who track a lot, and I think someone will be able to help you.

I have 20K miles on mine in 18 months and maybe ~25 track days.
Those circles indicate high temps as well as wear. Mine are quite prominent on the rears.
I also had an incident where a rear pad got so hot, the adhesive holding the pad material to the backing plate vaporized, it sluffed off the pad and went metal on metal (err, ceramic) and fried one of my rear rotors. PNA replaced under warranty, but I had to escalate the claim.

thanks guys for the answers
chrisn so your rears also show those indicators! have you inquire as to whether it's time to replace them or your dealer said they would be ok for some time left?

What the hell is with post # 2 ???
Is nobody watching the forum? Maybe just a weekend oversight, but lets hope crap like this doesn't get through too often. Nothing against an ambitious guy, but come on, not in a legit thread. Or is this an acceptable form of advertising?
Regarding the ceramics...Have you replaced the pads yet? If the pads are still good, then I doubt you're putting enough wear on the rotors to be worried about. Unless they're defective. To determine the service life, the rotors are weighed, and when they weigh a certain amount less than weight at manufacture (stamped on hat), they need to be replaced. Probably a good idea to have the dealer check em out just to be sure.

Weigh the rotor? That's a lot of labor to remove the rotor and weigh it.
How about just measure the thickness? Other than getting thinner, how could it lose weight?

Yes I recall reading the same. The PCCB rotor does NOT get thinner with use; you weigh it to see if it needs replacement. And please don't shoot the messenger
but I vaguely recall the explanation is that the wear and tear of carbon composite is seen in the breaking down of internal structural integrity and loss of material and weight that way (??????). The way carbon composite is made is that (vaguely recalling again) some fiber is laid down, and then something else is deposited onto this layer, forming the final product; so I assume it is this structure that breaks down over time. There is a European poster on rennlist.com's GT3 forum who works with brakes for a living and would know the answer; but unfortunately he doesn't post there anymore.
I just realize there is so much vagueness in my explanation.
Anyone please corrects me as necessary, and please be gentle LOL.

But, word has it (from a long-time Porsche expert) that thickness (or maybe thickness alone) isn't a good enough indicator for replacement criteria. That's why the weight of each unit is etched on it at the factory. Don't ask me why. Granted, it seems the only place the rotor will lose mass (weight) is from the friction surface, and you'd think that would be apparent as loss of thickness. Maybe some tech geek can chime in here, cuz it's rocket science to me
