Turbo not working (no induction)

Hi guys!

A little intro. My car just passed 4300 miles today.I take care of it by always topping off the oil, checking coolant, making sure tire pressure is correct and so on. I also check oil pressure and temp gauge. I dont drive it hard before it reaches appropriate warm up temps and so on.

Today on the highway, I heard and felt a bang from the back. It sounded like a backfire but I also kinda felt it, hard to describe. Any how, turbos no longer work. Meaning I can hear them spool up, but there is no induction!
Ill hear the whooooosh but then thats it, its almost as if the hose that connects the compressed air that goes into the cylinder has come off and is being released into the air. The electronic gauges no longer display anything other than 0.0 Bar. I checked the engine bay but everything seems normal. Nothing is ripped, blown apart, burnt or damaged.

Any one know what the hell happened?
I have not tracked the car yet, I baby it a lot, its not my second Porsche (just sold an 07 cayman S). Its a tip not manual.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like an intercooler hose might have cracked or come off.

I bet some A hole at the dealer took it for a spin and popped a hose or something?

Sounds like the the problem in the other thread except im getting no boost.

I have another question.

When I first got my car, upon hitting the throttle, I could hear a very light whoosh. I thought I was listening carefully enough to hear the turbines spooling. Was this light whoosh (unlike the very apparent whoosh now) normal or was it the hose coming loose or a little loose?

I'd recommend taking it to the nearest dealer for a diagnosis. Trying to guess over the internet what's wrong won't get it fixed, and whatever is wrong, it is not likely you will be able to fix it yourself. After all it is still under warranty.

You lost a boost hose coming off the bottom of the intercooler. It is just behind the rear wheels. This not that uncommon and easily fixed. If you jack up the rear of the car look directly behind the rear wheel well and you will see a hard plastic hose the size of a radiator hose . Try to wiggle them and you will quickly discover which one is loose.

HUMMM3,eclou,

You guys are both right but I posted the thread last night when the dealer was closed, hoping to get a response that relieved me. Just called the local dealer with an appointment.

Now the question is if its reasonable for this to happen on such a new car, the Porsche flagship? I know stuff goes wrong...but..

Thanks!

Be glad that it is most likely something simple. There are plenty of horror stories out there of first time owners that get a car and have an engine go. Then they get denied the warranty and are left footing a huge bill. This is an issue Porsche na has obviously tried to improve. Love them or hate them, problems happen.

Let us know how it goes at the dealer.

Going to have to wait till 10 Nov to submit car!

Should I continue driving it? Other than the whooshing it seems fine.

Do as I said and you will find the culprit. You should be able to just shove it back into place without too much effort. The tubes fit into place with a retaining clip that is a friction fit. Nothing really to unscrew. Should take 30 seconds to put back to normal

Just check the boost hoses. If it's them, it's a quick fix. If it's not them, then you have another symptom to help diagnose the problem.

eclou,ok gathering up the courage to attempt it myself.

1- are the turbos symetrical on the car or both on one side?

2-Whats friction fit look like?

If you have another car, I wouldn’t push it. Let the dealer worry about it. You still don’t know what the problem is 100% so is it worth it to drive on it and possibly do damage? If the dealer knew you were trying to fix it yourself they could possible deny you warranty.

Fixed

Ok good news!

I did a surprise walk-in later in the afternoon and managed to catch my favorite Porsche mechanic.

After explaining the symptoms he popped open the bonnet(?) and immediately found the problem.

The very large ORing-like part had slipped off, its the part connecting the pressure pipe (from the intercoolers) leading to the engine area.

Here is an image to better explain.

He loosed the metal clasp, fitted the o-ring part back on and tightened the clasp.

All is well, but ill definitely mention it in 2 weeks when I take it in for an oil change as im approaching 6,230 miles (10k km).

Still dissapointed that it came off.

That sounded like a pretty easy fix. Good news!

BTW, is that 9ff for show, or did you get some 9ff goodies?

Ohh my bad for possibly misleading you guys.

It was the only image on the net that correctly helped illustrate the issue.

My 997 turbo is stock !

Maybe an AWE exhaust in the future
