GT2 versus modified TT?
There are in fact a few modified GT2 turbos... Borg Warner sells a modified one, whose derivatives are used in the TechArt GT Street RS engine package (which set the Tuner GP record at Hockenheim) and RS Tuning offers a set for its 680hp package. These are both using modified GT2 VTG turbos.
hc, thanks for the reminder & correction. I had completely overlooked that recent test, AND actually did not realize how close the Turbo came to matching the time of the GT2, 7:38 vs. 7:34.
(I had to look it up, sin of sins LOL: http://jalopnik.com/5056908/porsche-...ring-lap-times . Can't believe after that mega GT-R thread I didn't have the details of this test memorized.
)
In this case then I have to retract my statement about the modded Turbo not being to beat a GT2. Thanks for making me love my baby Turbo even more!

I disagree, if you go by aichtners recent test in the TT on Sport Cups, he ran a 7:38 on sport cups. If that is legit, give walter a second or two because its him and the gap isnt that big.
Tune and adjustable coilovers (aggressive alignment) with some slight weight reduction and the TT would win. IMO.

The both TT and GT2, and the jet behind
!congratulations TDK!
There's too much missing info to come up with a qualified answer. But responding just 'by the numbers' doesn't do the GT2 justice either. The 2 is a bona fide track car, supercar, macho car. It's a handful to drive aggressively, and the control interface (wheel, clutch) is a handful as well.
These two cars are at the opposite end of the auto-periodic table - despite the fact that the turbo can be made to run with the GT2 in some environments. Porsche's are far more than 'numbers' cars. The feel, the flexibility, the trackability transcend mere numbers.
Seems to me that if you (or your wife) chose and are happy with the Tip, that's a proxy for not liking the workload and firmness of the 2.
Cannga has the best suggestion, costs notwithstanding. That is, go with two. Each one optimized for purpose. And, given the going rate of GT2's, this may not be a more costly way to go.

Heavychevy, have you driven a 997 GT2? If you have, I don't see how you could even begin to compare it to a 997TT,
The handling between a GT2 and a Turbo is like comparing a Lexus to an Exige. The differences in the suspension show why, it has geometry enhancements that are even above and beyond the GT3 RS.
Yes, you can say you can mod a TT suspension, but let me assure you that you can mod a GT2 suspension even further, and with less complication.

It wont take many mods at all to put the 997 TT up there with the GT2. Coilovers, weight reduction, and a little power, all the things that the TT lacks to the GT2 anyways (suspension, power, weight).
Dont worry, I have mad respect for the GT2, and I think it's even faster than the 7:32 Porsche gave it credit for, but the TT's are no joke either.
If I could do it over I would probally have bought the 2. However, it was not available then and have no patience!
EVT700, coil overs, TA sways, other suspension stuff, Tubi Race, ECT. Never will get any good resale but I'm not planning on selling anytime soon.
Been trouble free and thats a +! Oh yeh, car hauls a$$.

Good points. And of course, strictly as a daily driver, there is only "one and only": the Turbo.
Until heavychevy's post, I did not realize that the Turbo and GT2 are so close together in ring times, just 4 seonds. And not just any times, but ones from Porsche itself.
Maybe say a set of well set-up motons + 700 ECU mod = the equalizer?

GT2 = track star out of the box. Purpose designed track-mobile capable of insane performance on the track.
TT is no slouch...and in it's own right, is faster than most cars on the track...but it wasn't really designed for that. Since the 993, it's been slowly watered down to be a grand tourer. But I am positive you could modify one to match a GT2 on a track. Heck, I've seen a standard 996 C smoke a 997 GT2 at Road America, and that's a older platform and suspension set up.

Stock to stock --The Gt2 is the track star and if it's 7.38 to 7.34 -- "winning is winning" .
Modify the turbo and then then compare them and the Turbo may win on a even on the track (depending on the track). Drag race -no contest --modded TT would win .
I'm not sure how many Turbo owners bought the 997tt to use it as a track only vehicle though . In my opinion it's a street car primarily..
Modified 997tt's are in my opinion - bang for the buck king of the street . It will smoke everything and anything instead maybe another Porsche Turbo .
Perhaps its just me -- buying this car was a childhood dream and when I was a little kid and saw awsome cars roll by I did not think to myself how I wanted to run around in a circle (track) .
I grew up in New York and took the subway into the city and remember the days when I was a surfer dude misplaced in Brooklyn . I never thought of the track back then . I thought about the day that those guys who thought their cars were mean machines found out that they ain't all that . A modded out 997tt makes one heck of a statement and do spice it up in a down economy makes it that much even more assertive.

If the badge is not the issue I would go TT all the way.
Motons or JRZ Coilovers w/GMG goodies
Cage and seats
Big brakes 380MM
EVT 700 with Europipe
Champions or HRE's with Hoosiers
I mean the mods listed above would make the TT virtually untouchable by any standard and still leave some cash in the bank for other toys. Tip or not.

Personally I'd just flash the TT to get 50 hp or so and then start removing weight, CF GT2 seats, PCCB's, MPSC, Light weight exhaust, Remove the back seats, light wheels.
That's about 200 lbs or more right there, putting the TT at about 3300 lbs, then sways and coilovers, maybe some solid bushings like the GT2.
I'd put money on that car to beat the GT2 on the track. All the 700 kits are only going to make the car too hard to drive. Just a slight boost in power and better spool-up and throttle response is all you need.
Still not as good of a car as the GT2, but may be as fast for a couple of laps.

I love the responses. Of course you can make the Turbo as fast as a GT2, but it will never be a GT2. Toss a few bucks at the GT2 and where is the Turbo? Probably in your rear view mirror. These are two different beasts, drive em both and you will see. Personally, I need the back seat, awd and I took the savings from the GT2 price tag and I will buy another car. With that being said, waiting another 7 years for the next Gt2 is not something I plan on doing.
It is cheap to add power, try reducing weight on your Turbo and you'll find out why the Gt2 is so fantastic.
