However, you can powdercoat as long as you keep the temp and time low enough during the cure. That's one of the reasons HRE brought powdercoat in-house when we switched away from paint. We knew we had to control the time and temp (among other things) to make sure we didn't harm the wheels. Same story for strip. We use a bead-blaster now to strip instead of chemical strip for the same reasons. Our stripper assured us they were using a "cold" strip but they kept trying to get us to use the cheaper and faster 500 deg hot strip because they did it all the time for other people. No thanks.

At the end of the day it is just best to do it yourself.

That being said, I'm pretty sure Champion's wheels are painted in Japan and the Japanese do the best job I've seen for liquid paints. I wouldn't make that sway your decision. Great... did I just sell you out of HREs? I can hear the sales guys running down to my office to try and get me to stop typing.
Alan, how long have you guys been doing the powdercoating in-house?

I remember when i got my wheels, they were supposedely held up by the powdercoating guys.

+1 for the way the dynamags look. I have been looking at these but I worry about the strength of them. Good luck with your decision. With thousands of wheels to choose from, it should be an easy choice. )

There are no strength issues with the latest generation of the Dymag wheels. A combination of revised spoke design and material have resolved those previously documented.

We showed them at SEMA but they've been modified to be lighter and prettier.
Alan, when in Q2? any pics and guesstimate on pricing?

Over a year now but we were still keeping our old powdercoater on line for a while until we got everything up and running smoothly. I'd say things have been done exclusively in-house since summer. Chrome rims and custom finishes are the main delay these days. We still do chrome and custom colors outside.

Early Q2 is about all I can say at the moment. Final pricing is still TBD but it won't be cheap as our cost on the carbon barrels is... well let's just say its high. We have photos of prototypes floating around, but none of the final wheels yet but we'll have something soon. If you are seriously interested, give us a call and we can put you on the pre-order list.

Alan, is there anything i should be worried about in regards to the powder coating weakening my wheels?

Not if it is an HRE. Whether done in-house or at our old vendor, we made sure the temp/time curve was below the level at which it did any harm to the wheels. Our old vendor was owned by the guys that also own a Porsche tuning shop here in SoCal so they got it without argument and adjusted their process to accomodate HRE. We got a lot of pressure from competing vendors and stripping companies to let them do our wheels at higher temps as it is easier to get good visual quality at higher temps but we passed. At the end of the day, HRE needed to bring it in-house to more fully control the quality (visual blemishes) and the lead-time... hours/days vs. days/weeks. Our overriding strategy is to partner with the best (our forging supplier and bolts suppliers are great examples) and if we can't get what we want in terms of quality and service, then we try to do it ourselves if at all possible. This is a case where we had to do it ourselves mainly due to visual defects that began after the owner sold to a competitor and the long lead-times. Once the quality went downhill, it became way too costly and time consuming to always reject and redo all the wheels all the time. Flaws and long lead-times coupled together make for a deadly combination as you get into a never ending cycle of rework and mounting delays. Our customers can't be expected to accept the delays just to get it right. We had to do it quickly and get it right so that meant bringing it in-house.

I realize you probably were one of the customers that had to wait. Sorry about that and I hope if you do business with HRE in the future you see how things have changed for the better.

Choosing a wheel with such a variety is not an easy task . I'll pick a few ideas on the thread and comment.

Jrz I agree that the Dymag is a very cool looking wheel. It's also very light , looks amazing with titanium lugs and apparently has some new strength . I do like it and find a uniqueness with it intriguing .

Yet hands down I would pick an Hre wheel . It leaves no doubts about quality and strength and I feel that the brushed finish has the most hand made looking texture that i have seen. I still stare and smile at my wheel centers in the sunlight. I like the appearance of the monoblocks too but with mine (the C20) it has this traditional 3 piece style which not only won me over --but keeps them on my car .

Champion wheels --designed with Porsche in mind are well made too . Styling never won me over but that's just personal taste . Although the RS171 as well as the magnesium wheel have this deep convex arch which is attractive and well made .

At AMT, we intentionally "underage" the forging when we know the wheel will be powdercoated. That way, we take the time in powdercoat into consideration. And we always check the Brinell hardness when they come back from powder coating.
If you have your heart set on the Champions, PM me and I will send you to a good powdercoater who won't "hurt" the wheels.
So the word on the street is you are building 360 forged wheels??
