Techart suspension turns to nightmare
Techart suspension turns to nightmare
I have installed the Techart suspension with nose lift and took the car to the alignment shop on stock wheels. When i took it back thought they gave me another car, it felt so much better than before. Very smooth, almost zero bouncing etc.
We set the height to F55mm (shock height) and R195mm (shock height)
This is a bit higher than the maximum according to the specs but after contacting Techart they said it will be fine.
Two days later i changed the wheels to 20'' Gemballa
F 9,0" 245/30/20 Michelin
R11,5" 325/25/20 Michelin
I took it for a test drive and i noticed that the car was very bouncy, the wheel was shaking and on hard acceleration the front wheels felt like they were barely touching the ground.
Today i have e-mailed Techart telling them all these, the guy who was replying to the mails when he discovered that my wheels are not from them he was keep telling me that the reason are the wheels and that they touch to the fenders.
I desperetlly tried to explain him that i had those wheels for over a year now with no problems, and that the problem started after the suspension was installed.
I asked him repeatetlly what is the maximum height i can go but never got an answer.
Did anyone came across something simmilar?
The right heights i stated are as in the suspension installation guide. Measuring the spring height.
Please give me your thoughts.

While I have no experience with Techart suspension or Gembella wheels, but from reading your post it sounds like it's the wheels? You stated that after they installed the suspension and aligned it with the stock wheels on, the car drove perfectly and was even better than stock. But 2 days later, without making any other changes the Gembella wheels were put on and the problem started. Maybe have the shop align the car with the Gembella wheels on the car?
Hey Milou, like others, I think it's related to the wheels, at least partially. That said, I have something to add regarding the height. I don't know how much the Techart is related to the Bilstein (and am not clear exactly what height you are installing at), if it is this info might be of interest to you:
In the Bilstein, I was told that you *have to* lower the car at least about 5mm from stock level. If you have the car too high, the problem is "coil bind," making car overly stiff, and sounds a little like what you are experiencing. Any expert please correct as needed.

Couple of questions:
Can you post a pic of the height of the car as it sits now? I'm curious to see how the TechArt recommendation translates to actual ride-height.
Second, did you put the Gemballa wheels back on the same locations they came off? I'm going to assume yes since you're most likely running a directional tire, but worth a try. I know it sounds weird but I've seen situations where simply moving a tire to another corner of the car can create wobbles or vibrations.
Last thing you could try is just taking the wheels off and re-torquing them. Maybe one didn't seat exactly perfectly on the hub, or there was some dirt or debris on the hub.
At this point your best bet is to start the process of elimination. Start with re-torquing the Gemballa wheels. If that doesn't cure it, then try putting back the stock wheels. If the problem persists, I'd say it's the suspension, but if not, it's the wheels. Just based on what you're describing, at this point I'd venture to say it's the wheels.

The TechArt coilovers are really just Bilstein PSS10 with different springs on them. Not sure if they are softer or stiffer then what the standard PSS10 comes with. If you want to send me some pics of your car and your current alignment specs, I can give you a recommendation for ride height and alignment to help you out.

The problem is that at the alignment shop i was told that i don't need to change the alignment of the car when i change wheels. This must be wrong since the wheel offset is different.
I'll visit another shop tomorrow who seems to be more familiar to suspension upgrades and wheel alignments.
The most disappointing thing of all this was the Techart support from Germany, they gave me zero feedback by keep saying its the wheels and they touch on the fenders, i told the guy that nothing touches the fender but he didn't want to understand.
I have asked them over and over again about the ride height, what is the maximum i can go and never got an answer.
According to the instructions this is the maximum but to me it looks kind of keep it in the garage or you'll scratch it!
