I've had some experience having cars painted and found that going with what the dealer recommends gives good results even it costs a few hundred more. There are paint jobs and there are paint jobs. As some others noted - it's a fair amount of work and requires specific technology and experience. I researched a GT3 wing and was quoted about what your were quoted (includes a long Porsche warranty period - I forget exactly how long). I would get it done right by seasoned pros known well and supported by your dealer and includes the warranty. As I write this I am haunted by some poor paint jobs on parts in the past - and getting it redone properly costs a bundle.
